Superman II: The Richard Donner Mistake

I just bought Superman II: The Richard Donner cut and I'm disappointed. Not only was it drastically different from original, but it was less entertaining and the ending sucked.

I can't directly compare every little thing, but some of my favorite scenes from the original have been cut, which I'm annoyed about. Why couldn't they have released the original along with this version.

A lot of new scenes were also added but more having to do with how Lois finds out about Clarke being superman. More about Jorel and Superman. And more about Lois and Clark's love. There just isn't enough Superman in this movie. He appears in about 3 scenes throughout the whole movie.

Now the ending, what a rip-off and an incoherent mess. The ending is the same as the ending of the first movie. Everything is messed up, so he rewinds time. But it doesn't make any sense. If he could just rewind time, why did he have to fight the 3 bad guys. He could've just rewinded time. Also his rewinding of time would only have affected the earth, but according to Mr. Donner, it also affects the universe. Since he rewinded the 3 bad guys right back into their glass prison in space.

Disappointed.

They did release both. I have both copies myself, but I never have watched the Donner cut. I guess I will have to check it out.

After YEARS about hearing how much better Donner's work was than Lester's, I finally watched the Donner cut, and I have to say, it sucked.

Richard Donner is a GREAT director however, responsible for such greats as Superman, Lethal Weapon, and THE GOONIES!

Yeah, I didn't like it at first. But after listening to the commentary..

the ending of the first Superman was taken from the original script of Superman II for a more powerful ending. Donner was fired before the ending of II was rewritten. Thus the same ending. He also explains why Jor el played a bigger part in the movie.

It's an incomplete movie. So it's not fair to compare to the original Superman II.

I bought it on HD DVD, I don't think they have the regular version of the movie.

What's annoying, among a couple of other things, is there's supposed to be footage where Superman talks to Lois at the end of the movie, where she "okays" him turning back time. Instead, the time reversal happens out of nowhere and you're left scratching your head. You have to wonder why they made it out of Donner's footage, but left off such an important plot point out? Also, while the extra powers were lame, I much preferred the show down in the Fortress at the end of the Lester cut. In the Donner cut, it just sort of ends, which makes it feel a bit dull and anti-climatic.
