Just in case; yes, I used the search engine. No, I didn't get any hits on this. Then again, some topics on Superman I got on the search engine yesterday didn't come up today.

Anyway, http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cC-OMMhcIH8
If anyone remembers the real trailer from the 1980s, it was horrible. This was done in the "modern" trailer style. The effects look really weak compared to today (didn't help that the Salkinds basically rushed the effects, had the new director reshoot almost the entire movie, and skipped on the budget, I think), but still not bad for all that.

Pretty good trailer. I laughed at the Zod page. :) Shadow, I thought Donner directed the majority of Superman II before Lester took over. I don't know about the Salkind's skimping on the budget.

I'm not totally sure about the budget thing, Superman IVs budget was slashed to 1/3 because they decided to spend TWO THIRDS of the cash WB gave them for IV and spend them on other movies instead. The effects on II WERE rushed, I'm sure about that much. Donner had shot about 90% of II before the Salkinds booted him off. They kept a few shots here in there, but almost the entire movie was reshot be Lester. Example: the Lois Lane leaping off into the water to force Clark to show he was Superman? It was originally shot under Donner that at the beginning of the movie, she pulled the same thing but at the Daily Planet. She threw herself OUT A WINDOW instead of merely jumping into a river. Clark had to run out at Superspeed, rip open an awning to help break her fall, in combo with using super-breath to slow her down. Once it was setup so she would land safely, he ran back up to the DP at superspeed and looked out the window to help make her believe he was up there the whole time. The scene at the hotel where she finds out his ID, she "shot" him with a gun. He open his shirt and shows the "S" symbol and chides her for pulling that stunt; if he wasn't really Superman, he would have been killed. That, she tells him, is why she used a gun full of blanks ;)

Anyway, there's a big DVD set of the Superman movies, including director's cuts, coming out later this year. They're going to try to reconstruct the original Donner cut as much as possible, but they're going to have to work around what was shot by Lester.; I have no idea if there was anything critical to the plot that would be contradicted by the two version, so we might get stuck at a 50/50 hybrid, but I have no idea, really.

Oh man! Donner's version of Lois trying to punk Clark sounds like it would have been way cooler than the river thing. I would think Clark would know the difference between a blank and a real bullet, though. I wasn't too crazy about the Clark-trips-into-the-fire bit because, while Clark is supposed to be nerdy and clumsy, he would never allow something that would reveal his identity to happen. Maybe he subconsciously wanted Lois to know... :)
