Superman Gets a Hipster Makeover
posted by Josh Duboff - Tue Oct 26 2010, 11:28 AM PDT

celebs: Robert Pattinson

Superman has a new look, and the redrawn Man of Steel now more closely resembles a a vampiric Robert Pattinson or a sulky member of My Chemical Romance than a hunky matinee idol.

The new Superman will appear in "Superman: Earth One," a graphic novel by writer J. Michael Straczynski and artist Shane Davis that retells the superhero's origin story. While the iconic superhero retains his dark mane and defined six pack, he now has a decidedly more emo vibe -- pale, leaner, and brooding. (No need to get too worked up, Superman loyalists: This new graphic novel series doesn't replace the original comics, but rather will serve as a "reinterpretation" of his younger years.)

The Superhero Universe seems to have been increasingly influenced by what could be termed the "Twilight Effect," as Wonder Woman was given a similarly "edgy" makeover in June when her "bustier and hotpants" were traded out for a blue biker jacket and a trendy new hair style.

In the words of the New York Post, the new Man of Steel "wears hoodies" and "has smoldering eyes"; and as Clark Kent, he wears low-cut pants and skinny ties. So basically Superman has turned into a full-on hipster.

DC Comics co-publisher Dan DiDio described the graphic novel -- in book stores November 2 -- with adjectives more typically used to hype new CW dramas.

"We wanted to tell a story that's hip, sexy, and moody," he said.

Hopefully Jon Hamm -- the front-runner (at least in the eyes of Internet commenters and fanboy director Kevin Smith) for the role of Superman in the upcoming Zack Snyder reboot -- will take note of this development. Now would probably be a good time to invest in some hipster glasses and ironic t-shirts, Jon.

To appeal the "Twilight generation"? Seriously???!?!

Thanks for sharing.

Anyway, I can understand the need to try new things, but ugh--emo is the worst thing to come around since hippies

Exactly my point..i was never a huge fan of superman...but this just seems like a disrespect to the original creator and the true fan base from back in the days. Next thing you know he'll have giant fangs coming out of his eyes.

Earth-One superman isnt the real superman anyways.

DC: Earth One is a series of graphic novels published by DC Comics. Each graphic novel is set in its own universe, separate from DC's mainstream universe. The series has been compared to Marvel Comics's Ultimate Marvel universe. DC Comics has announced two titles in the Earth One series, Superman: Earth One and Batman: Earth One. DC Comics has also announced that more titles are forthcoming. The series begins with Superman: Earth One, which will be published on November 2, 2010.

Oh christ - are they going to Emo-up Batman as well?
I mean, Batman was always, "I'm rich bitch, watch me as I get awesome gadgets that will fuck up your day, you damn criminal scum!"

I fear how Emo-fied Batman will become, and what that will mean for the origin story.

Superman was always "meh" in my book anyway. Never got into that level of superhero-ness.

The concept of Superman, which Reeves portrayed, was an alien that hoped for the best and simply wanted to make the world a better place. This image they are creating... is cliche and stupid. Superman died a long time ago, they need to make their own damn characters if they want to try something new.

Batman was always kinda emoish. his parents die so he try's to kill himself fighting crime with just gadgets but no guns..

i don't think it will take much to do it.

Superman got really weird for a while. he has unlimited power and can't be killed. I just never got into the comic it just sucked. really with the power he has Lex should NOT stand a chance in hell. And WTF how much kroptonite is there!? it seems every villain has some

anyway the only good superman comic was when Doomsday kicked his ass.

How is that "Hipster Superman"? He's just wearing a hoodie. He doesn't even have a scarf or ironic t-shirt on.
