Superman (1978)

It's been on HBO all weekend. I'm pleasantly surprised by how well it's aged. The beginning drags a little, it's like 45 minutes before he even "becomes" Superman. But the effects are well done for the time and the acting was pretty good. Hackman is awesome as Lex Luthor, and Christopher Reeve was great in the role.

Some parts still crack me up. "Otisburg? OTISBURG?"

too campy for my taste, but it's a good movie. I like Superman II better.

Gene Hackman parading around like Liberace just didn't do it. The movie would have been better with a somber, evil Lex Luthor.

It was the (late) 70s. WTF do you expect?

I mean look at the top TV shows for 1978:

1. Laverne & Shirley (ABC)
2. Happy Days (ABC)
3. Mork & Mindy (ABC)
4. Three's Company (ABC)
5. Angie (ABC)
6. 60 Minutes (CBS)
7. M*A*S*H (CBS)
8. The Ropers (ABC)
9. All In The Family (CBS)
10. Taxi (ABC)

The top four are the epitome of "camp."

This was also the age of "The Love Boat" as it premiered in 1977.

And the next year was the premier of The Dukes of Hazzard.

Let's face it, this time period was the age of "camp."

Batman - The Movie (1966) w/Adam West was a tad bit before that.

I'm sure there are older ones.

well yea the later supermen movie were bungled. but the first two were great

It is a perfect comic book movie. The campiness only adds, not detracts. It is superbly true to its genre, faults and all.

Adam West -era Batman is controversial. It is not true to the "Dark Detective" genre of Batman.

Yep, great, great movie. Few have come close to the first couple Superman movies.

Spiderman II has one of my favorite scenes (the train) that rivals some of the best, imho.

I like Superman III, maybe for nostalgic reasons. A lot of people think it's bad. I thought the giant computer in the cave was awesome when I was a kid.
