i'm a newbie but have finally decided to build my own rig. I've been reading the reviews and forums the past 3 weeks and have decided to try to build the gaming computer from the AMD FX-53 with the ATI X800 pro or XT, with a gig of dual channel ram.
my questions are these:

1. NO matter which forum or review i read all the motherboards for the 939 Pin seem to have problems. the ASUSA8V deluxe rev 2.0 seems the best however this, the ABIT and the MSI K8N-Neo 2 platinum all seem to have some serious problems. (i've read so many horror stories about all of these on recent forums). Is there one that will just plug and play without all the hastle?????

2. For my dream computer i don't mind ponying up for quality. right now i just want to get something up and running without the need for OC. the 64 bit processors seem the way to go for the ultimate gaming(especially the 939 PIN), however if the mobo's havent yet worked out their kinks, do you think it would be wiser to go with a different processor and a more tried and true mobo that wont crash???

3. Finally, many of the 2004 mobos seem to be coming with serious premium sound. i have read that using the mobo for your sound will take away some of the performance of the rig as a whole. would it be better to get a sound card or does it make that big a deal.????

Guys any info would help or just give me you opinions. i may be new at this but, unfortunately i've got to start somewhere!!!!!!!!!!!

As fast as socket 939 is no it won't make any appreciable dent in performance. Many run socket 7 with onboard sound and eventhough CPU usage is more than a tyical add-in pci card it usually doesn't make too much of a difference. possibly 5-8 frames in some games more or less. Some of the new onboard solutions are 24/96, but it seems that they are somewhat buggy (CMI has been). New AC97 (the new high end AC97) has been ok. Set it up with the onboard and try it out and if you like it keep it until you think different. That would be ny suggestion. Now if we were talking about a lower form of AC97 (like ALC650) I would say get an add-in card.

Personally I would. I have a socket 754 system, but that's a personal call...and I might add I went socket 754 for that reason - that the 939 boards are not refined yet. I would go for reliability first.

anyone else have an opinion on whether to go for the fx-53 (939Pin) vs the more reliable yet slower 754 pin mobos

Its hard to even say 754 and slower. they are so fast. When it comes to gaming, do you realize how few extra FPS you would get with lets say an FX-53 and a 3200+ ?

I have a friend with a socket 939 with an FX53., and yes, he got about 5% better performance.....until I bought an XFX 6800Gt (he has an R9800P). Now I absolutely flaten him. So...it also depends of your GPU and the difference can be made up very quickly..

The FX purchaser is hard pressed to justify the expense when the gpu is lacking. Stability is huge. Having a buggy system is maddening.
