Coworker is selling his blown 540I for 6500. Has 150K miles, 6spd, It's a pretty sweet car but supercharged high mile bmw just screams headache to me. Says it has 400hp and i have the money. I just don't want to buy a money pit. What do you guys think? Should i just run?

Money pit. Fun, but there's no way around that fact. Add to that you'll probably see something like 10mpg lol.

A 5-series of that era (mfg in '96, so 15-16 years old) wouldn't be a great idea even if it had 100k miles and all maintenance records.

$6,500 can buy you something pretty fast that's a lot cheaper to work on. Won't be as cool, but that's the tough thing about cars, hard to deal with a budget like that without compromise.

Hmm just save your cash and find a deal on a E39 M5.

I don't know though, I can think of worse rides to spend $6500 on.

At that price, if he's got a full maintenance history to back it up and everything in it works, go for it. Assuming you've got extra money to spend if you need to fix er up.

Just be prepared for maintenance and wear and tear items on a 15 yr old 150k miles german car.

I would be interested, but only as a second vehicle and only if you're willing and able to do some tinkering yourself.

Did he do the work or was it done by a local shop?

kbb says ~$5k
