Hi All,

I have an old super7 board and want to get a "new" motherboard to replace it. I want to stay with the same AT style with K6-2 support. Can anyone recommend a current board that will support ATA66 and USB?

Dont think there is one, there isn't any development in the s7 sector for a while.. any ATA/66 and usb would be in PCI addon cards... does ur S7 support k63-450 ? if it does, I'm looking to buy one.

FIC503+ rev 1.2a supports UDMA33 and USB, OCing it however seems to be a mystery.

I'm not sure ATA66 is worth sweating. I built a FIC VA-503+, which is ATA33, and an FIC VA503A, an ATA66 board at the same time with identical 10 gig 7200 RPM Maxtors. As I recall there wasn't much difference between their Sandra and HD Tach hard drive bench mark scores.

If you really need ATA-66 controller, you may as well buy it separately as PCI card. Those Promise PCI ATA-100 RAID controllers are really cheap and give you much better performance than VIA integrated IDE controller. As for new mobo, I've heard that ASUS P5A-B is really good...

Well, the "underperforming" VIA IDE controller is actually just an issue of BIOS not setting it up right.

Use a DFI K6BV3+/66, and you'll get everything you wanted, including UDMA66 and up to 2 MBytes of L2 cache.

The actual speed gain from going UDMA66 isn't really worth that, however. And I really doubt that there are super-7 boards that do not have USB ... so you better just go shop for a suitable USB slot bracket to solve your problem.

It's time to move on. I think they have perfected the ATX non-socket seven boards by now. If you must keep the socket 7 try a Soyo SY-5EHM. Anand did a review a few years ago. They have worked well. Beware--- the FIC 503 can be a nightmare!!!! If you want socket 7 and AT case the choices are few. Get a new case, board and CPU you will be much better off. Donate the old computer to Good Will. Rick.

Thanks for all the help. I have been looking at all the boards mentioned and am glad to get the feedback. I would much rather go to a TB setup, but right now I have to keep this system viable.

After further thought the ATA66 is not an issue but the USB is. I have USB on my old board, but when I have both ports in use it seems to lock up regularly. It is my hope that a newer board will not have these issues.

I am trying to convert this to a modest gaming system for my kids but I am not going to spend $300 - $400 and junk the old stuff.

Thanks again for all your help.

What game do they play?? Reader Rabbit or Quake??? Little kids games will play on anything. The K-6 is not great with action games like Quake etc. If it is action you could stick in something cheap like a VooDoo 2000 PCI and get by. Rick

For my 2 cents it?s the fic 503+ its AT style it also has an atx connecter so if you buy a new case you can still have the same mb. Also It uses 72 pin sims or sdram so it?s pretty flexible. Good voltage selection for the cpu?s and will run at 112mhz bus pretty reliably. I had one it was great mb. Sold to my brother-in-law. The great thing about family is you can always pawn off your equipment when you want the newest and bestest thing. Wait a second, he still hasn?t paid for it, scratch that sell it to somebody you don?t know preferably someone with money.
