Super Unleaded Gas Question

If a car needs gas with a 91 octane rating, could you fill up with half super unleaded (93 octane) and half premium unleaded (89 octane) so it would average out to 91 octane? (not really sure how octane is calculated)

i don't think i would ever do it since you would only save about $1.50 a fill up but was just curious...

I think you could, but it'd be a pain in the ass. I'd just fill up w/ 93. (The highest you can get in California is 91 anyway, so it doesn't make much of a difference here...)

how would you save any money?????? 93 out by me is 10 cents more expensive than 91, and 91 is 10 cents more than 89. so if you pay 10 cents more for 1/2 the tank, and 19 cents less for 1/2 the tank, its the same damn cost.

Nothing. I'll let everyone know when the police tell me something.

Should be fine. I've seen gas delivery reports. The number of gallons of 89 delivered was just the total of 87 and 91.

Where I live regular unleaded costs 10-15 less then the second tier gas. Also, they don't deliver 89 gas, i'm pretty sure its just a mix between the two grades.

I've never seen 91 octane in NJ, it's usually just 87, 89, and 93.

that's why i was wondering...Acura recommends 91 octane for my car, but all i ever see here in TX is 89 or 93...

BTW, my $1.50 savings wasn't right, it would only be about $0.70 since since i usually put 14 gallons in when i fill up so $0.10 x 7 gallons - $0.70...

like i said, i won't do it, but was just curious...

Another option would be to always fill your car when it's about half empty. If you alternated between 93 and 89 each time you fill up, it would hover between 90 and 92 octane (you could always throw an extra 93 fillup in there every once in a while to bump up the average). Of course that's probably not worth the trouble either when you're only saving $.70 on a tank.

Here's a better idea - get the Citi Dividend Plantinum Select Mastercard, it gives 5% cashback on gas, so each $20 fillup of my Honda gets me back $1. Each $100 fillup of the truck I drive for work nets me $5. 🙂
