Another very bad situation:

http://www.cnn.com/2013/11/07/world/asia/philippines-typhoon-haiyan/

and

The western Pacific storm Haiyan has intensified without interruption since Sunday and is now a dangerous Category 5 super typhoon, with maximum sustained winds exceeding 160 mph. It is on a path due west, and landfall Friday in the central Philippines is inevitable.
Haiyan – known as Yolanda in the Philippines – is likely the strongest storm to form on the planet this year.
“Based on satellite imagery, [Haiyan's] the strongest storm I’ve seen since Bopha (2012),” says Ryan Maue, a meteorologist with WeatherBell Analytics.
Super typhoon Bopha, whose peak winds reached 175 mph, caused hundreds of fatalities on the southern Philippine island of Mindanao in December 2012.
Maue says it’s possible Haiyan’s maximum sustained winds have reached 180 mph.
“[The] system has developed to almost max intensity for a cyclone,” notes a NOAA bulletin.
Officially, the Joint Typhoon Warning Center forecasts additional strengthening over the next day, but with the storm near its theoretical maximum strength – it’s more likely it has leveled off. As it continues westward over the Philippine Sea, its inner core may re-organize through what’s known as an eyewall replacement cycle, which would briefly weaken the storm. But water temperatures are very warm along Haiyan’s path, so significant weakening is unlikely.

Yeah. I have people working for me there, especially Mindanao. They just requested their pay in advance so they can better make storm preparations. I don't know the weather history of the area, but they should expect this kind of stuff yearly, right? Just with varying intensities?

Pretty exposed area, so yeah, they get hit pretty often. But nobody expects THIS intensity. Possibly 180+MPH sustained, gusts well over 200, you don't see a lot of storms like that.

Damn, my people are here in Iligan City, and this is from a storm in 2011.

Looking at the terrain of Iligan, I'm definitely worried because they're just sitting ducks. Northwest is the bay. The rotational direction of the storm I think is going to be blowing the bay right into them. Behind them are mountains and valleys, so possible landslides if they back up inland. Plus it is a poorer country so they most likely don't have personal cars and public transit systems would likely be overwhelmed at this point. All they got are scooters and their feet and any government assistance vehicles.

I can't tell if they have any land areas below sea level ala New Orleans, but if they do, then massive flooding is likely as well.

Plus the island itself is so small.

They are surrounded by flood danger from the bay, landslide danger from the mountains, no transportation to get out, and not enough land distance to get themselves away even if they had a means of transportation. So at this point it's just hunker down and hope for the best.

The Philippines get hit by typhoons on a regular basis... Just not this strong. Lots of potential for mudslides and considering a lot of people live in bamboo houses... I expect a lot of people to be displaced. Plus parts of the country a still recovering from a recent quake.

Guh, this is so bad. I hope my guys are alright. I don't know what the structures are like in Iligan City. I hope they're in a relatively high building that won't collapse and can stay above any flood waters.

What do you do in a situation like that? Can't go under ground because there might be flooding can't stay in a building because it might collapse.

I'm not at home, but Al Jazeera, Euro News, and BBC should be covering it.
