Super Strange problem after upgrading

I've never run into this before, so I hope someone out there knows how to fix it...

I just moved to a new desktop system, and in the process a whole ton of my exe files are no longer working.

Old:
P4 2.4, 1GB RAM, Windows XP Pro SP2

New:
AMD64 3200+, 2GB RAM, Windows XP Pro SP2.

what seems to have happened is some of the exe files...not all...have become unusable. When I try to start them they open a DOS box, then close and exit. the file properties now show the DOS compatibility stuff, like memory window size etc...It's like all these programs just became DOS programs.

I thought it might have something to do with the 64bit processor, but I'm not running a 64Bit OS...I should be in 32Bit mode.

Just noticed one more thing. A ton of zip files are now showing up corrupted. I'm fearful that I had some type of corruption on the drive that may have eaten a bunch of my files.

any thoughts anyone?

First, can you put your drive back into the old system it was in and see if your files work properly there?

Is this the system partition ( C: ) your data files are on and that has been swapped to the new system?
The system partition ( C: ) cannot just be swapped from one system to another without performing a repair install or loading the drivers necessary for the new motherboard.
I think you may need to perform a repair installation with your WinXP install CD to update the drivers for the new motherboard and other components.

Please see the Repair Install section of this thread for more information.
Hard Drive, Partition, and Data Recovery and Diagnostic Resources

A repair installation may be a good idea if you need to access or copy your files but a better idea would be to save all your data on another partition or drive and perform a clean installation of the operating system. Swapping an operating system from one system to another is not a good idea due to motherboard drivers and drivers for other components.

Check the drive jumpers to ensure they are correctly positioned. (Master or Slave depending on the IDE cable and other hard drive configuration)

It seems you may need something that will repair a possibly corrupted filesystem, but I would check the other possibilities first.

I believe I recall a similar thread here at Anandtech recently. The subject was exe files corrupted as I recall. (Search is failing for me at the moment) In that thread that problem was assosiated only with zip (and auto zip) files. The solution was to install a 3rd party zip program. If this fails try searching for some combination of "new install disk corrupt exe file" later when search is back up.

Check for viruses. It may be some virus which corrupts ZIP and EXE files.

Remember to update the virus definations of your antivirus before scanning your PC.
