I can't figure out if this is going to be a party fighting game like Super Smash Brothers or a party fighting game like TMNT Arcade. <shrug> I'm hoping the latter but I have a feeling it will be the former. Cause I mean really, making a game to compete with Super Smash Bros Brawl on the Wii makes about as much sense as making a game that competes with Super Mario Kart on the Wii.

SAN FRANCISCO ? January 26, 2009 ? Today Ubisoft announced that it will launch an all-new, original Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles® (TMNT®) video game ? the first that is not tied to a TMNT® movie, television show or comic book ? which will be a four-player action fighting title.

sounds like it's an actual fighter like SSBB.

Part of what?s adding to the anticipation for this new as-yet-untitled Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles fighting game is that it?s being developed by various members from Game Arts (who worked on Brawl) and Team Ninja (Dead or Alive, Ninja Gaiden). That?s a lot of talent for a licensed game based on a property that really isn?t the hype machine it once was.

TMNT wants to top Brawl in key areas like stage design and online play, and with a release date somewhere around September 2009, you?d hope it to have some kind of improvement over Smash Bros. The look comes straight from last year?s CG film. The turtles themselves will carry a colored glow to help tell them apart while fighting. And so far, the team is concentrating on a Remote+Nunchuk control scheme, rather than supporting GameCube or Classic controllers.

So, Wii fans, excited? But let?s get realistic here. What are the odds that Ubisoft would position Game Arts/Team Ninja staff on a TMNT fighting game that is exclusive to Wii? I?m going to say nil. When asked about exclusivity, Ubi-producer Chris Ferriter says ?I can?t really comment on that just yet.?

Yeah, looking at the pic in my OP and the pics at Destructoid it definitely looks like a SSBB clone. Dammit.

Wait, why are people disappointed that it might be very similar to SSB? Better a clone of a decent game than a shitty "original" that we always get out of video games based off of popular media franchises.

For someone like me who never heard of this game before, I need talk of it taking from SSB's roots to even pique my interest in the first place.

the TMNT fighter that was on SNES is actually a very good fighter that had some depth to it.

I think it was called TMNT Tournament Fighters.

To be perfectly honest, I just want a really good TMNT platformer, heh.

Ditto. The TMNT movie game was alright but it was sorely lacking because it was only 1-player with you switching between the turtles. I would just enjoy a 4-player co-op experience much more than a SSBB type game.
