Super slim fans (40mm?)

My friend is having a heating problem. His graphics card shipped with a heatsink on the gpu, but there is no fan on top of that heatsink. His system used to lockup after a bit of game playing because the card would get to hot. I temporarily fixed the problem by jimmy-rigging a fan to the back of the case so it would blow air onto the card, which works (for now). I went to the computer store near us (not CompUSA/Bestbuy/etc), but the slimmest fan I could find there probably wouldn't fit onto his video card and between his soundcard (he is forced to have sound card in PCI slot 1 or the computer get's really fubaared).

Does anyone know where I can buy a really slim fan, or one of those heatsinks that is cutout in the center and a small fan inside (like the blue orb, but smaller)?

How do I go about removing the old heatsink from the gpu?

Thanks,

Radio Shack has some small fans, I imagine they have a 40mm. Also, www.coolerguys.com has 40mm fans as well as many more specialized options under "Chipset coolers".

On my GeForce3 the heatsink and fan are shaped rather strangely, with the fan snapping into the heatsink, so I don't think the fan alone can be replaced. You should make sure that the heatsink doesn't have any vertical protrusions that will stop the fan from mounting, if it does then perhaps you'll need to buy a corb and replace the heatsink as well.

The heatsinks are often attached with a thermal adhesive, so you may have to do the trick of freezing it so the adhesive will become brittle.

You'll probably need to replace the heatsink with something like a crystal orb or this heatsink from tennmax. What you'll need is a heatsink with integrated fan. And whatever you get, take the time to lap it for best results.
