A group of my friends wanted to benchmark our computers with Super Pi 1.5. Although my score was in line with Super Pi results out there on the web my friends were not.

my scores

E6750 @ 3.2 - 15.9 sec
E6750 @ 3.6 - 14.2 sec

Friend #1
AMD Phenom X4 940 @ 3.4 - 20.57 sec

Friend #2
Intel I7 920 @ 2.66 (stock) - 14.5 sec

What is going on here? I am really amazed that the AMD 940 did so poorly even overclocked. My E6750 @ 3.2 beats the AMD @ 3.4. I am also surprised that the I7 did do a better job.

I know Super Pi is just a single core benchmark program but why isn't the AMD @ 3.4 beating my E6750 @ 3.2? Is the AMD chip that bad?

thanks for the info. I did not realize that. Can somebody recommend a benchmarking program that would be fair to AMD and Intel. I am looking for something that would just test for a single core speed.

there is no single core benchmark utility that will give you a good overall picture of anything.

Why not look at some of Anandtech's cpu reviews, and see what benchmarks he uses, and choose from there ....

The closest to fair would have to be NuclearMC and CineBench. ScienceMark is also a fun benchmark, but it highly favors any CPU that doesn't use an FSB.

NuclearMC *HATES* AMD Cpus. My X4 @ 3.4Ghz gets DESTROYED by even my old E5200 @ 3.5Ghz. The Q8000 series even when clocked waaay lower clockrate.

sooooo......... does that only leave CineBench or is somebody else going to say it favors Intel :)

Cinebench is fairly close Q6000/8000/9000 series vs. Phenom II, but i7 annihilates everything with that.

You'll notice, if you do enough reading of forum posts, that anytime one guy's CPU gets beaten by more than a percent or two, it was because that benchmark favors the other guy's CPU. NEVER will you hear someone say, "Yeah, my CPU isn't very good at those type of computations".;)

Intel has deep pockets..............hahahaha j/p

omg  there has to be a fair test. doesn't there? I thought Super Pi was a common denominator but now I'm thinking nobody will agree. :)

The one thing I notice tho however, there never seems to be a benchmark which favors AMD ;)

not true!

first off 3dmark06 CPU test ONLY will give a good indication of how good each is (being multi-threaded etc.) also, some will even say 3dmark06 favors AMD/ATI who knows...

also a good test would be graysky's x246 test (search on google or here in cpu forums) very good indicator of raw cpu power.

always the good ole winrar bench, i7 will dominate, but really not a bad idea of raw speed

Cinebench as listed above is good, but i7 will put on a show there

If you REALLY want to compare CPU's i would suggest to run a whole test suite that anandtech or another non bias site runs, to get a good overall perspective of what each of your systems are capable of. (not sure if you want to throw GPU's in the mix seeing as anyone with a higher end model will dominate any 3D benches)

Not exactly angry or anything, but a bit disappointed. I rather like the 790X chipset, though I prefer Intel for SATA performance. I have a 120MM Cooler Master Heatpipe tower cooler on the X4, and it does keep temps incredibly low while being very quiet.

But yeah, I would never recommend Phenom II to anyone, unless it's much much cheaper. Even Intel dual-cores seem to outrun Phenom II X4 when overclocked to their norms (mid-3ghz on air), outside of very rare apps that can use 4 cores decently. Even an overclocked Q6600 (Released in Jan '07!!!) annihiliates the crap out of PhII.

superpi favors intel arch.

its been shown since C2D.

AMD has lost the super pi race since yonah (matured P3) smashed the superpi sub 10s. score.

Haruhi is too fast just to run super pi... she isnt very good at those computations...
If its not gaming.. she refuses to run it.. saying its not meant to be installed on her... :p

You can try memory benchmarks. Everest Ultimate, or even using Winzip or 7-zip to see bandwidth/transfer results.
