My girlfriend has one of these neighbors, except living above her, and it's a young lady. We are not making any excessive noise at all, truly. Last night we were watching TV on her laptop (yes, laptop speakers), with the volume at a really low level. It was quiet enough for us to be having a whispered conversation in her bed while it was playing. Around 10:05 pm she (the neighbor) starts stamping on the floor like an ape...ironically making slamming noises loud enough that we both jumped every time she did it. About a week ago, she had come down to complain to us about noise (again, similar situation). We assumed she was in a bad mood, were really polite about it and just shut the thing off (we were going to bed soon anyway).

But, I really think this lady's being ridiculous now. C'mon...laptop speakers at a quiet volume at 10pm? Get over it! If you go into another room in my gf's apartment, you can't even hear it. Not everyone goes to bed at the same time as you, lady. If you're going to live in an apartment building, you're going to have to accept that other people live there, too. And they don't have to change their entire lifestyle to suit you. Complaining about excessive noise (loud subwoofer, big party, obnoxiously loud laughter, etc) would absolutely be reasonable, but this? Are you kidding me? Should I complain everytime I hear this neighbor's footsteps on the creaky floor above us?

Thing is, I don't see any good solution to this (other than the gf staying at my apartment instead). It's our word against hers, so if she goes to the landlord, what can we say other than "nuh uh!"

I seriously think some people just enjoy being angry and finding things to complain about.

Have you ever been on the other side of it?

I had been living in one for 18 months without any issues (lease has a specific item in there citing "24-hour quiet time"), asside from the Asyrians across the way who liked to barbeque on their patio right outside my bedroom window at 3am every once in a while. And then the complex hired a Mexican maintenance man and his wife and they moved in a completely different building. Their music could be heard from the street 100 yards away and could be felt throughout my entire apartment. Then a couple weeks later, the lady next to me who had been a perfect neighbor moved out and another couple moved in. Their TV was on 18 hours a day with the sound turned up so that the only place in my apartment I could not hear it was the far bathroom. Management refused to do anything about either of them. Thankfully, we were month-to-month at that point, so we moved out at the end of the month.

This is why I will never live in an apartment again. Ever.

Anybody barbequeing on the patio in a building that is mine, or adjacent to mine, gets a visit from the fire department. (Unless I know its electric). You can usually tell by the massive amount of fire and smoke.

I dislike dying from carbon monoxide (yes I know each unit is sealed but still, people kill whole families this way).

I have been on the other side of it-some guys who used to blast German metal at all hours. And yes, I'd ask them to stop, and they generally would. It's annoying to be sure, but again, that's talking about excessive noise. I've been living in apartments, usually with roommates too, for 8 years. I've never had anyone complain to me about my noise level. (Until this, of course).

Kinda ironic a bar-b-q hater posting in a thread complaining about haters.

If it's just one layer of flooring or thin construction, it's probably very audible. When the house was empty, I set my speakers to "blast" music at about 60db at 1m away (I have a SPL meter), and went around the house. I could hear it upstairs on the other side of the house. Damn 1920s era construction...

Trust me when I say there is absolutely nothing about your life which inspires jealousy.

You are in denial.

As long as you are in the denial phase, there is no hope for recovery. If you do not recover, you will live in your disillusion for the rest of your life.

You do realise that the patio is outside, right? And that carbon monoxide poisoning only happens when people bring the grill inside with no ventilation, right? There's literally zero carbon monoxide risk from someone using a grill on an outdoor patio.

I think we have a communication problem. Down here in America's Wang a "patio" is an enclosed area with screen. On the first floor they have a screen door leading outside. They often have a lower area which is not screened, but often wood/drywall up to roughly your knees/waist before the screen starts. Above you is a balcony from the 2nd floor apt. Nearly all "patios" are built this way. There is a serious risk of CO poisoning as its heavier than air and collects in the patio and enters your home.

I could care less if someone is outside barbecuing (10 feet from the building like the fire code says) but at least once a month there is a news story of some jackoff barbecuing on his patio killing his whole family (I didn't know there was anything wrong!!!! I thought they were all sleeping! OMG OMG!)

Dammit, how do you manage to see right through me like that.

I admit it, there is a vast crater in my soul that could only be filled with the trappings of your life. I will never truly be happy until I have a psychotic ex-wife, a herd of kids and grandkids (some born out of wedlock, bonus!), a menial job in a remote corner of an absurd state, a mobile address, a head full of half-baked political ideas, white trash neighbors, and a partridge in a pear tree.

Oh, and a big grill. Bitches love big grills.

Uh no, in older buildings there isn't a firestop between the units, the CO will creep into the attic space and get into all lower floor units in the entire building. Or creep through the barbecuers home and into the hallway and into your unit.

If she is going to be that big a bitch about the situation, I would cease to make any effort to be quiet.
