i watched Super Mario Bros (2023, not 1990s live version). it was animated and well done. My review:

That got me thinking: if they are brother's then Mario is the last name?

This article explains it (sort of): https://www.nbc.com/nbc-insider/are-mario-luigi-real-brothers-mario-bros-names-explained#:~:text=Is “Mario” the brothers',action movie Super Mario Bros.

1) Mario is his last name.
People call Mario by his last name (like people say Obama or Reagan) but Luigi by his first.

2) Creator revised to Mario Mario a decade later.
yep, two first names... ugg.. i like 1st explanation better

Sidenote:
Mario started off as a carpenter at a construction site in Donkey Kong in 1981.
His creator decided to change it to plumber and give him his own series in 1983.
dont understand why he did that instead of creating a new char for the mushroom kingdom.
then you can keep mario as a carpenter and have a 3rd series

Mario is his first and last name. Mario Mario and Luigi Mario.

Edit: look this was all covered in the source material, I can't be held responsible if you skipped the first chapter.

This was early on in the video gaming business, I don't think they really conceived of it the way you're thinking of. He didn't even have a name in Donkey Kong, he was just "Jumpman". I think the Donkey Kong series did just fine with Donkey Kong as the main character.

Look the people that came up with this are japanese.
The correct title would be Super Mario, bros. they just messed it up.
Mario is Super Mario but because he has a bother they are also, bros.
The last name is unimportant and has never been mentioned, the old movie doesn't count, that was just some poor sob trying to make the movie work.

It's Mario Mario.
While it is implied by the title of the Mario Bros. series, in a 1989 interview his full name was stated not to be "Mario Mario".[35] The first notable use of "Mario Mario" was in the 1993 live-action film adaptation of the Super Mario series, and was further used in Prima's official video game strategy guides, in 2000 for Mario Party 2[36] and in 2003 for Mario & Luigi: Superstar Saga.[37] In 2012, after Charles Martinet voiced Mario declaring himself "Mario Mario" at the San Diego Comic-Con,[38] the next month, Nintendo CEO Satoru Iwata said he had no last name,[39] with which Miyamoto agreed the month after.[40] Two months after Iwata's death in July 2015, Miyamoto changed his stance, asserting at the Super Mario Bros. 30th Anniversary festival that Mario's full name was indeed "Mario Mario".[41][42]
