Super Mario Bros. 2

The only one better was Toad, and he was only good for digging through sand quickly, which Princess sucked at.

However if you use the warps, you avoid the need for anyone but Princess

I played it when it first came out, I used Luigi. It didn't really fit well with the rest of the Mario Series (no fire flower powerups), 4 character selection. I think it was just a modified japanese game to include the mario characters?

You are correct, it's not really a Mario game. It was reskinned due to the popularity of Mario 1 in the states.

yep..in japan it was a game called "Doki Doki Panic"

Doki Doki Panic

The reason that the American/Euro version of Super Mario Bros. 2 is so unusual is that it was made by making small changes to a Japanese game called Doki Doki Panic: Yume Kojo ? a loose translation is "Heart Thumping Panic: Dream Factory". Various Nintendo of America employees personally despised the original Japanese Super Mario Bros. 2, which they found to be frustratingly difficult. Knowing such a game would likely sell poorly in the United States, they wanted to release a different sequel they thought would be friendlier to American audiences. Although Doki Doki Panic was originally set in a storybook and had an "Arabian" theme completely unrelated to Mario, it was modified to use Mario sprites and music. With these small revisions, it was released to the U.S. market in 1988 and featured on the cover of the very first issue of Nintendo Power magazine.

The American/Euro version of Super Mario Bros. 2 was eventually released in Japan for the Nintendo Family Computer under the name Super Mario USA. It was also released as part of the Super Mario Collection (in the U.S., Super Mario All-Stars) in Japan.

I am playing this on my Gameboy Advance SP which sadly doesn't fit in that category.

Got anything more productive to do, Nik ? 😉

Of course I do. Don't you, rather than playing video games and posting in the wrong forum? 😉

Playing video games is far more productive than justifying your presence by pointing out the supposed shortcomings of others, sorry to disappoint 😉

Luigi is awful. He has a good vertical, but he's way to touchy to control in mid-air. The Princess and her floating was more useful most of the time for long horizontal jumps.

That and every instance where you would need a large jump there is either a prop or a super jump that you can use to replace his usefulness.

On a related note, do you think the game would have been as popular had it been brought over without the Mario tie-in? I don't think it would have. Changing it to a Mario title made a big difference, IMO.

Only reason it was popular in my mind.

I love it though, it's so different from most mario games and so utterly bizarre.

I enjoy the madness, it seemed much more interesting than the typical Mario game.

SMB3 is pretty badass, I will give it that, but I still enjoy the challenge that 2 brought to the table.

yeah, good thing I'm not doing this to justify my presence then, huh 😛

I know about all the warps, but the 7th level is still retardedly hard.. I hate the first two stages of it with a passion 😛
