Super large TVs vs projectors

The Z5500s aren't too bad, but I'm not so sure they'd be the wise choice given the 17' distance that he's trying to cover.

Hey all.

I have a pretty large living room and a 42" plasma TV. I love my TV (even though it's only 1080i), but it's too small for me to really enjoy. It's about 17 feet from where I sit, so I'm thinking about upgrading. I've been looking at the Mitsubishi WD-82838 and the cheaper WD-82837. They're both 82", which should be a nice size for my living room.

I've also been considering getting a projector, maybe the LG CF181D or the Epson Powerlite 8500 UB. If I get a projector, I'll also have to get a sound system, since I'm just using the speakers on my TV now.

Has anyone used any of these products? Any recommendations or thoughts? I don't know a whole lot about HT systems and I'm not in a big hurry, so I have some time.

Thanks!

The 8500UB is absolutely excellent, especially with a good screen. I love mine.

FYI, the Epson 8500UB has been discontinued. It's on closeout at quite a few reputable dealers. You can pick up a brand new 8500UB from Projectorpeople or Visualapex for $1800 with free shipping.

Also, check out the 8350 which is the entry level replacement for the 8100 (also discontinued). It's a nice improvement over the 8100 and very comparable to the previous gen 8500.

I'm not an LCD guy, so I would be more inclined to pick up a DLP projector, but not many decent choices in this price range.

And as for the original question, I would not use a projector for day-to-day viewing. Waiting for the bulb to warm up and cool down before turning it back on again. It's just a huge hassle. That's why I have a smaller 42" plasma for casual viewing and projector for movies. The setup works well for me, but I'm itching to upgrade the projector.
