I got a BB gift card from my Discover card cash back program. It is supposed to give me 15 free rentals for a year, but I am 95% sure I have rented more than that. My card expires today, so I've been renting a lot of stuff for the past month. I check with the cashier today at a location A and she told me I have rented 11 movies there for the past month only. Now at another location B I have rented like 8 movies and at a location C I have rented 2 movies. This makes me think that:

1- The card is for 15 free rentals at only ONE specific location. (the card states is can only be used in one BB but the register people never read the fine print)
2- The computers between different BB are independent from each other. (can someone confirm this?)

Thus, this makes me think that one can potentially get 14 free rentals at different stores (at the 15th rental you have to give them your card), since they don't cross check between stores. Also, they have no way of checking the balance of the card. Moreover, the card only has a bar code. No smartchip or anything like that keep tracks of things.

I have the same card, for 20 rentals though, but I have rented at least 40+ movies. I have also used it at multiple locations despite what the card says. Only recently has blockbuster questioned my card, but I think that is because I have used it 20 times at that specific location. Just ordered myself another one. Good Deal if it lasts.

ive been to different bb's before and only the local one would ever recognize my membership, i could rent at others, but they had to add me to THAT store's list, so id say having a free rental card like this is pretty sweet

Yeah, the memberships between the blockbusters are independent. A non-local one would have to add you. Unless you are a rewards member, then somehow, you're automatically in every system (or immediately added once you give them your card). I've been a rewards member for a few years now, and no matter which blockbuster I've been to, my membership automatically scans in and I'm good to go. (it claims it's good for the entire country).

And this GC deal sounds mighty sweet, I just might have to give it a try. =)

Hey bolido2000: I wonder if your idea is to trade cards so you two can get even more freebies?! That's what came to my mind! =)

So let me get this right I have to get this card through Discover or can I get this card through some retailer or at a Block Buster store? Unsure where I can get a card.

Thanks

nearly every blockbuster near me is independent. I get bills in mail for late charges all the time cause I start using one or the other more and never know about late charges at the others. So it seems mail billing all goes through same place, but memberships don't. Each blockbuster near me doesn't know if I rent at others for the most part. There are , however , links apparently.... where a few stores might share a computer system. I think it mostly depends on whether you have a newly built blockbuster or one that was some other chain that got bought out. I think when they build new ones, they make sure they are linked, but when they buy chains, they get stuck with whatever local wiring the store had.

Discover only has 10 or 20 movie rental cards... I just got a 10 movie (retail value $40). You can get one once you've earned $20 on the cash back thingy.

I'm pretty sure that those doing it couldn't care less.

This is the truth. I had a 52 week rental card. Well I didn't rent one per week and I moved to another location(500 miles away) from the blockbuster I originally used it in.

I went in the last week of the card to see if I could get one last movie. The clerk asked me why I never used the card because I had never rented a movie using the card. I had used maybe 23 rentals on the card at the original blockbuster.

When I did it I thought that I COULDN'T use it at another blockbuster. I wasn't trying to defraud them. I just tried to get one of my rentals at a different store.

I don't think this is a good idea guys and I don't recommend it because you are just technically stealing from the store. I thought that my case was unique and it was a glitch in the computer.

I had one of these a couple of years ago. same thing...i just kept renting and renting until the card expired after a year.

For those of you crying fraud and saying not to do this, realize that I (as well as others) didn't do this on purpose, and didn't even realize I had exceeded the rental limit until far later. Plus, I would put the burden on Blockbuster and not the consumer. In Chicago (and I assume most other large cities), there are Blockbusters EVERYWHERE. Using the card, I rented from 6 ot 7 different stores. It wasn't until the 3rd store that someone actually looked at the card and followed the directions, but that didn't stop other stores from taking the card. It's up to Blockbuster to make sure the coupon (gift card) is valid, not me.

The only place I know to get these cards is through the Discover Card Cash Back bonus program. You just order it as one of your "double" cashback bonuses through the rewards program. Very easy

I have one of these "20" rental cards from my Discover last October and just got another one last month assuming the first one would be running out any time now.

SO the only place to get these is from Discover and you have to be a cardholder, am i reading correctly?

:( I dont have discover card but i do live within 10 minutes of 4 blocksuckers.

Can you used it for games? freakin $5.99 a pop and like $4 or $5 for a movie I forget. I get my movies at Hollywood Video using those $.99 for up to 3 movies coupons but gotta hit Blocksucker for games cause HV doesn'r carry many multiples. I'm out of coupons except for Movie Gallery r1g1f's now & I HATE renting less i have coupons, I feel like i just got raped everytime i don't get 2 for 1 or better..... :(
THANKS

Yes, you get it using Discover Cash Back award money.
I think I used it for games but I don't remeber for sure.
I haven't rented games since before I got my PS2.

it might be wrong but fraud constitutes the user changing something on the card.

This is NOT fraud, if they don't enforce using it at one store and keeping track off your rentals it's not our problem. It's a oversite in their system, not fraud.
