super fast linux desktop env for a 200MHz laptop?

where should I look first for a linux distro that is pretty much set up for a fully functional desktop env like ubuntu or fedora, but that is tuned to do web browsing fast on a 200MHz laptop?

damn small linux (DSL) you can install directly to your harddrive and it should be as fast as all get out on that computer. It's fairly healthy and such and you can get help with it in forums from their website.

Follow the installation instructions, after the install upgrade to GNU utils and then enable apt-get compatability for installing (but do not upgrade to) Debian packages. That's one thing you can do.

Otherwise there is mydsl packages for installing various software things without having to 'upgrade' anything.

Otherwise you can go and install Fedora Core 5 and then install various 'minimalist' software peices.. Like fluxbox or whatnot.

You need a very minimalistic desktop. The most popular is DSL. You can do a lot of run stuff with this distro. How much ram does that laptop have? If it has at least 128 megabytes then you can type 'dsl toram' once you first boot up the cd and you'll be able to run the distribution completely in your ram! I've done this before when I was running my counter-strike server. It runs really fast and is lots of fun. 🙂 Otherwise, I was able to run this distro off my (iirc) 300mhz laptop with 16 megs of ram.

You can run Puppy Linux and Feather Linux using the toram boot option as well. These are also minimalistic desktops that could run on your laptop. The last minimalistic desktop I'll mention is Slax Popcorn Edition.

Now depending on how much ram you have you could run a distro like Xubuntu. You might be able to get away with running this on 128 megs of ram, but you might not be able to run it at a decent speed. If you have 256 megs, then give it a try. Otherwise, I would recommend a lighter distro.

Astrumix is good and light too. I have it with system and admin tools running off my USB drive 😉
