Super AMOLED vs IPS LCD

my sis uses a galaxy nexus and her amoled screen also sucks. so perhaps the newer amoled in the s4 is better, i dont know.

The GNex has a horrible AMOLED and is by no means a good judge of AMOLED screens.

So, what brand new AMOLED tablet does Samsung make? I know they had an AMOLED one a couple of years ago but, like with most of their tablets, it was a failure or it wasn't appreciated or whatnot. Either way, I don't think they followed up with another AMOLED tablet. According to Wikipedia, Samsung only came out with 1 AMOLED tablet, the Galaxy Tab 7.7, which was in 2011. Nothing since...

The iPad Mini display is crap. Poor pixel density, high reflectance, low contrast, average brightness, and small color gamut. The display is a huge step back from any modern tablet, including ones that are much less expensive.

I like LCD better where color accuracy matters, but for phones I don't mind either one.

Agreed, how could Apple release the iPad Mini with a display of the same quality as the iPad 2? If you're going with the whole Retina display marketing angle, you have to stick to it and not deviate...

SGS4 movie mode is just as accurate(if not more accurate as Anantech review shows) as the iPhone 5 screen.

Well, the displaymate test says that the S4's color gamut was 122% in Movie Mode, while the iPhone 5's was 104%. That's a difference of 18%...

Also, I have physically compared several S4 screens to my iPhone 4S, and to a HTC One, and iPhone 5 (the latter two are store models as well). To sum it up, the One and iPhones had much brighter screens as expected, and the S4 has a greenish tinge to yellow images in Movie Mode. Most of the other colors were good enough and very acceptable.

This isn't as noticeable per se, but it's just something I noticed when comparing the phones side by side, using the same images from the net.

I have a note 2 with super AMOLED and the display is damn near useless in direct sunlight.
My older phone with super LCD was a little better. But didnt look nearly as good indoors.

Not true, there is a huge difference in image quality between, say, the iPhone 3/3GS and the 4/4S/5 and the new crop of SAMOLED Androids.

The gap narrows considerably when comparing the S3 and the iPhone 5, for example. At first glance, you may not notice pixellation on the S3, but load up some red images (a red rose, for example) and you'll see a noticeable pock-mark pattern on the solid-colored portion of the petals. As for text and fine edges, Displaymate mentioned something about the SPPI (sub pixels per inch) being the most important for making those look sharp, and the S3 had 216 SPPI even though it was advertised as having something like 306 ppi, which leads to people being able to visually detect pixellated text, etc.

Oh, also - the S3's OLED screen for me, had weird blacks. Splotches of areas that were dark, some less dark. OLED screens aren't uniform.

Not true at all. The first thing I noticed when I first turned on my S4 coming from an S3 is how much sharper the screen is. I dont even look for flaws and such and I instantly saw the difference between S3 ans S4.

Isn't that more a product of the resolution change and how things scale? How's the text size? If it's the same as the S3, then thats a fair comparison.

BTW most these articles about the S4 admit that color accuracy has gotten much better. IT's not AS accurate or more accurate than the iPhone 5. Anand spends his whole iPhone 5 screen review rating about how this is THE BEST screen calibration he's seen on a phone that rivals even monitors. That's not the tone we're getting for the S4. It's more of a "wow this is so much better than before."

Why don't I hear you complaining about the Nexus 7's washed out colors, small color gamut, dithering, etc. Plus 1280x800 isn't that great either. Oh and the Nexus 7 got a B- on Displaymate whereas the iPad mini got a B. What now? Biased much? Yeah I thought so.

So I have a Samsung Galaxy Tab 7.7

Pretty happy with it right now. It is *very* thin and black levels are *very* good. It is fast enough also.

Compared with the Nook HD+ I had been using... this one is actually close to the same thickness, but is much much much smoother. Screen has blacks to rival a plasma screen which I really appreciate. Resolution seems fine enough.

Also, back camera has a flash and is decently good at 3.2mpxl.

Anyone else have it? Only issue I have so far is a slight creak on the right bezel and I can't get my 64gb micro sd card to work in it.

The difference isn't that big. I've had my hands on every flagship phone released the last year or so and the step from 720 to 1080 is nowhere near as significant as 480 to 720. If you zoom out on text, it's clear that 1080 offer sharper text, but you're not gonna read at that level of zoom anyways because it's tiny. The screen overall is better on the S4 than the S3, but I can do without 1080, it doesn't really matter on 5".

I do and have no creaking and my 64GB sdxc works just fine in FAT32.

Couldn't agree more. One of the reasons I went for the Sensation over the S2 and again with the HOX over the S3.
