I have a bunch of old 8mm and super 8mm film I would like to transfer to dvd or even vhs. I know you can take them to places that do it and I've seen a quote of $0.20/foot, but I was wondering if anyone has done this on their own? If so, can you elaborate on your hardware?

Thanks!

get a digital video camera and record the film as its being projected onto the wall. There are also special transfer gadgets that allow it to be transfer without being projected onto the wall. but you will still need the projector.

Yes, I have. Sony Betacam lined up literally millimeters below the projection beam in a perfectly dark room. Camera was a loaner from a university, this was before the HS had the HD equipment donated.

Telecine equipment is quite expensive therefore transfer fee is high.

Check the local university or film club to see if you can rent time from them because the price are much lower than get it done professionally. However, you will need some one to help you with the equipment.

PS. $0.20 per foot is in line with the average cost of $100~200 for the first 10 minutes then about $50 per 10 minutes there after. Telecine studio rental cost can vary from $100~200 per hour pending rental fees/supervise requirement.
