Sunday's games in a nutshell

So what do you think is going to happen on Sunday?

I think Bucs D > Raiders O.

BTW, that commercial for the Nike running shoes was hilarious. I laughed everytime I saw it. The best part is when the guy comes running down the steps after they resume play on the field. 😀

The Bucs weakness is their size. Oakland's offensive line is huge. By the 4th quarter, Tampa is going to be worn out and Garner is going to run rampant. If the Bucs haven't put them away already, they'll be in trouble and I don't think they have the offense to put anyone away early.

It's the Raiders game to lose, but a few key turnovers or special teams plays and anything could happen.

Their size??? No, their weakness is the offensive line. You don't just wear down the Bucs. They have the fastest and strongest front 7 in football. Their secondary comes into a close second to Philly. You can't wear them down. Garner will get ~15 carries and Gannon is going to have to pick apart the secondary. You are absolutely right about the turnovers.... they will determine the game. IMO, the best chance the Raiders have to win is to score first.

I agree Oakland's O-line is huge and they are GOOD. Most of Gannon's success comes from the fact that he is never really pestered in the pocket. He has time, reads the coverages and finds the open man.

That being as it may, Gannon tends to struggle when he is under pressure (like most quarterbacks). You saw that in the game yesterday when the Titans were finally able to get a little pressure on him. The key to the Tampa D is that front seven, and more specifically the front four. I have a feeling that they are going to put a severe hurt on Gannon. They can generate enough pressure on a QB rushing four men. That is a HUGE advantage.

The Raiders D is good, but Philly's is much better. If the Bucs O line can hold up like it did yesterday, then Johnson will be able to find the open man and I think that the Bucs will be able to run the ball better against the Raiders than Philly. I really think that the Bucs are going to win this game.

It's going to be the #1 Offense against the #1 Defense. Should be a great game and the Raiders D is nothing to sneeze at and I think they'll get the best of Johnson come Sunday. I think it will be close at halftime with the Raiders widening the gap in the second half as the Bucs D wears itself out against the Raiders O.

Go Raiders!!! 🙂

definitely. this is one of the most overused cliches in football, but it's because it is so true. the most recent example of this i can think of in terms of championship games is the ohio state-miami game.

I agree. I am really looking forward to the matchup. An Eagles/Raiders matchup would have been a good game as well.

has anyone started a poll on this yet? tampa's D is good, but i just think the raider O will find a way to win. similar to what happened in the tampa-st.louis game a few years back.

I agree except you're forgetting that Oakland has a D also, and a pretty good one; enough to break the Bucs and pull away with the win in the second half of the game.

No hudle will kill the Bucs. Thier good and fast but too small to deal with oaktowns beef up front for 45 minutes.
If gannon takes care of the ball and converts decently Raiders 44 Bucs 10.

Mwilding why change your eagle face? bitter?

It's the crow I am eating...

I'm not sure about that one. I'd put 1989 offense of the 49'ers (with Joe Montana, Roger Craig, Jerry Rice, John Taylor, etc) up against any defense you could name and would have a pretty safe feeling about picking the Niners. That was the year they demolished a really good Broncos team 55-10 in the Super Bowl, and it could have been far worse if they had wanted to run up the score.

This point is hard to argue either way for a couple of reasons. First of all, I would take a recent dominant defense (like the Baltimore D that won the SB) against any offense from 10 or more years ago simply because the players are stronger and faster than they were before. Also, schemes and system change to combat each other. Any recent defense would have an easy time stopping an offense from a decade ago because their techniques are more sophisticated and better disguised. Conversely, any recent dominant offense (like this year's Raiders) would stomp on the Bear defense of '85 because of better schemes. Therefore, it's fun to pit the best units over time against each other, but not practical.

Recently, we saw the Patriots defense stop the vaunted Rams offense in the Superbowl. The Rams offense was considered more dangerous than the Patriots D, but the Patriots found the "hole" in their offense and exploited it. Since then, the Rams offense has been slowed down and they didn't even make the playoffs a year after their last superbowl run. The question is whether the Bucs defense has figured a way to slow Gannon and the Raiders down. While Oakland's offense is good this year, Tampa has 5 years of excellence behind it and I would give them a bigger chance of winning the battle.

The fact that Gruden knows pretty much every Raiders player's strengths and weaknesses, I think the Bucs have the edge.
