Sunbeam's fan controller: does turning it to 0v switch the power off?

I want to know if switching the knob all the way to 0v actually turns off power to that fan, or does the controller simply provide enough resistance so all of the power is dissipated as heat on the fan controller?

Yes, and sometimes going to around 5V or less doesn't give the fan enough power to startup.

so it actually cuts power to that particular connector? I'm just worried about burning out the unit since I plan to switch them off frequently and don't want it to just generate heat/resistance to kill the unit.

I can vouch for this ... I had one of these on my old rigs ...

Yes, it will just turn whatever you have powered to it completely off ... and it doesnt even have to go all the way down to zero ... around 4 to 5V .. it just dies ... so be careful if you have your HSF connected to this (I did .. had a Vantec Tornado hooked up to it)

Was wondering this myself. If it's a vairable resistor and you turn it down until the fans stop, the power is being soaked up by the control pot and will produce some heat. It would be better if there was an off position totaly switching off power instead.

yea, this is my question exactly, just phrased better.
I'm sure it will stop most fans under 4v or so, but I want to know specifically if the heat just gets soaked up and wasted or if it cuts power completely?

probably cuts power after click, before click its dissapating most power as heat
