Sunbeam Rheobus

pontifex

the sunbeam rheobus is probably one of the biggest pieces of computing garbage i have ever seen.

mine came today so i went to install it. wires ripped right of the sockets on both cables with very little pressure. i'm unable to fix them. unless you're a 5 year old girl, good luck getting your hands in it to remove/replace the leds. heatsinks don't come out or at least don't come out easily.

this one is going back. no way am i going to try to mess with it anymore.

maybe mine was a dud, but i'm not buying anything from Sunbeam again.

The Sunbeam Rheobus is known as one of the best, so far as I know.

Excessive force, perhaps?

Send it back, get another.

These wires are soldered on, and they're EXTREMELY thin. That's standard.
Be more careful.

i didn't use excessive force. the wires just literally fell apart with the slightest pull.

I bought three when Xxoide had'em at $7.25 each. Modded two onto Lian Li bay covers
with 3mm LEDs, came out real nice 😀
Have not had one single problem yet, with wiring, jacks or operation.
I'm old with fat fingers, nerve damage in both wrists and a touch of arthritis in my right
index & middle finger. I'm right handed.

So boo hoo for you 😀

Frankly this thread belongs in OT,as you will find few whiners here. 😉

so maybe i got a bad one?
people aren't allowed to compalin about bad products? can't warn other people of poor products? based on your response, if anyone should be in OT, it should be you.

Thanks for the warning.

I just bought one, and haven't installed it yet -- I'll try to be careful (and dig out the soldering iron if necessary & possible to use.)

Which wires ripped out? I don't remember installing mine much anymore, so I'm not sure which wires on which sockets.

As for replacing the LEDs...well, replacing LEDs isn't something that you're going to be doing often, as they're rated for 100,000 hours. Otherwise, if your hands don't fit, do what I do - find a tool that will. Needle-nose pliers for instance.

Heatsinks coming out easily? They weren't designed to be removed or replaced, as Sunbeam saw little need to do so, just as a laptop is not designed to be user-friendly on the inside. It's meant to be compact, light, and capable. Sunbeam's Rheobus was designed to have a nice front-end user interface (knobs and LEDs), and good functionality. Neither were designed with user servicability in mind.

Sunbeam's Rheobus has consistently received good reviews. It is capable of working with power-hungry fans, has an on/off switch, and works all the way from 0V to 12V. I've owned two of them (two PCs), and they work just fine. Only got one PC right now, but the other rheobus is providing service to control a little jury-rigged floor ventilation fan.

GalvanizedYankee - dang, $7.25 each? Wish I would have bought mine for that price. Very nice.

My Rheobus is as good as any other inexpensive fan controller I've had my hands on. And I think you can still get them for $9. (yup, silver is $9. and black is $10.) plus shipping at jab-tech.com

.bh.

The problem is not that we don`t like whiners....

The problem is that the Rheobus is again as good as any other in-expensive which equates if we are being politically correct to "cheap" fan controller. As far as I know you are the only person who has stated they have had a problem with the Rheobus...

I bought 3, but my only problem with them was that they expand towards the face plate, and thus don't fit in my case without some serious modding. I destroyed one by switching the black and yellow power lines going to it (these things run wonderfully off of just +12V & ground). One is being modded, and one is untouched as of yet... 🙂

you probably got a bad one. happens to any product

Its probably be best fanbus for its price and that i have used. I bought mine 2 years ago and its still runing the same as the day i got it. I've suggested it to 4 friends in the pass month and they love it.
I've used zalmans, vantecs, all rubbish.

I've never had any problems, except for the SUPER bright LED's!

I'm pretty sure they overvolt their LEDs....which is good and bad. Like you, I also found them to be too bright, but after only about a year of continuous use, the LEDs that were always on vs those not - definite difference in brightness.
That said, yes, they are a bit bright. There is always the option to disconnect them, or if you're feeling like soldering, I'm sure a resistor could tone them down a bit.

I think people are encouraged to complain about bad products. However, if you look around the forums you will find an overwhelming amount of praise for this particular product, so it's probably not fair to call the product "bad" in the face of such happy users. You probably just got a bad one. I have two of these, and the only reason I didn't get a third for my latest box was because I wanted temp monitoring and fan control in the same unit. As far as changing the LEDs, I changed all of them in both the units I have in about 5 minutes. And my hands are largish, plus I am not that co-ordinated, so they aren't that hard to replace, unless they changed the design in the last two years.

I "need" one of these things now. Heh, I also "need" another D12SL-12.

What do you know, Jab has the Rheobus for $8.95...

*whips out credit card* 😱
