Free software doesn't work economically. The ones that succeed are the exception and not the rule.

Very funny.

Give credit where it's due. Sun is one of the few companies to compete directly with MS, and not have been squashed into oblivion. The others I can think of offhand are Intuit, Oracle, and AOL (don't laugh but they did handle the MSN threat to date). It's easy to stifle competition when you're a legal monopoly engaging in illegal business activities.

The SPARC version if free to download, but you have to pay $20 to download the x86 version.

I suspect a high correlation between the number of people who voluntarily run solaris and those who enjoy whips and chains stuff in the bedroom 😀

$20 isn't bad for an OS though even if its not my favorite.

But overall, aren't we suppose to pay for software? Though its not something that takes up space, someone had to sweat to make it, so someone needs to get paid ...
 
software used to come with the hardware... it wasn't until relatively recently that software became a pay-for item, which is when the FSF was founded (ok late 70s/early 80s)

Sun has spent millions developing Solaris and you just want it for free??? I bet you walk into your local super market, fill up your cart and start tearing the cashier a new one because you have to pay $2 for a gallon of milk. Those greedy farmers!! They don't need to eat food and live in a house!

Sun is within their rights of charging $20 for THEIR OS.
 
I use Aix, UX, Solaris and Linux at work. The sun machine that we have may have different cable connectors but it is a real sturdy machine. We use it to run our data conversion and it runs consistently for weeks doing number crunching.
Good machines those sun blokes make.
