Hey,
I just bought this Ultra 5 with a clean HDD. I plugged it into my SGI monitor (SVGA) hooked up the KB and mouse and turned it on. It beeps loudly and the caps lock, compose and scroll lock key lights blink for about 5 seconds and then they all stay off. All this time I get nothing on the monitor. I tried the Stop+N thing and the Stop+A thing, but no avail. Anyone have any idea what I should do? This is my first Sun machine and I'm kinda lost. Any help will be greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance.

As you've already found out, video is not enabled during motherboard post. You can set up a serial connection and see if you can get any add'l post info. Check this for details.

Is that the only video hookup on the back of the machine? If there is an onboard VGA port and a Creator (add-in) 13w3 Sun machines typically go with the add-in card. So if there is an add-in card, remove it. I would recommend connecting to the serial port though to try and see whats up. Nice machine, Im digging my Ultra 10. Just wish I had more ram for it :)

It only has the onboard VGA port. As far as the serial connection is concerned, don't I need another Sun machine to make it happen? or can I do it with a windows machine?

I believe it can be done with hyperterminal, but I dont know for sure. Are there any flickers on the monitor at all? Try a different monitor if you have one. I tried my U10 on an old 15" monitor and it did not work. Moved it to my 19" and it worked fine.

yes, you can use hyperterminal for the serial connection. 9600, 8-N-1 with a standard null modem 9 to 25 cable (cross pins 2-3 or some such?).

Well its a PGX24 onboard graphics card. I tried a different monitor a Sony CPD-G500 and that didn't work either. I guess it's off to Radio shack now to get me a null modem cable and see if this baby can talk TTY. Is the loud beep from the keyboard at boot normal? or is it trying to tell me something?

btw. thanks for your insights so far, its been a real help.

I dont know about the beep, but you will have to have the keyboard unplugged I believe, for the serial cable to work.
