Sun announced today that they are suing Microsoft for 1 Billion dollars. They're claiming Microsoft made Windows XP incompatible with Sun?s Java programming language. What I find ironic is that Sun fought in the courts to have Microsoft's version of the JVM kept OUT of Windows XP. Furthermore, if a user goes to a webpage that has an applet, Windows Update gives the user the option of installing the JVM so that the site will work. And if the user upgraded from a previous version of Windows with a functioning JVM, it will carry over to the new installation of Windows XP.

1 Billion dollars? Come on.

What the hell? Why is it that everyone is sueing MS because MS doesn't include everybody else's stupid freaking product in the distribution of their own!?

WTF! You don't like XP not having a certain functionality? DON'T FREAKING USE IT.

C|Net - Sun brings antitrust suit against Microsoft
MSNBC - Sun to sue Microsoft for $1 billion

<< SAN JOSE, Calif., March 8 ? Sun Microsystems Inc. said Friday it was suing rival Microsoft for more than $1 billion because the software giant made the Windows XP operating system incompatible with Sun?s Java programming language. >>

Seems like a lot of money also when considering Java is a free product, and it itself brings in no revenue (products based on it might).

Is sun completely retarded? It isn't broken, they chose not to include a VM. I have the java runtime 1.4 running as we speak, nothings broken, microsoft just doesnt want to put it in as default.

it's not that it's broken, the real irony here is what was posted in the original post.

What I find ironic is that Sun fought in the courts to have Microsoft's version of the JVM kept OUT of Windows XP.

Sun fought to keep JVM out of XP and now sues MS cause it isn't there.

now that's a crock of . . .

Why, did Microsoft film Sun showing it's tits and then sell a video tape of it?

Blah to the lot of you; good for Sun.

While, strictly speaking, it goes against my beliefs since I think court abuses suck butt, anything that hinders microsoft is good news to me.

'Sides, might help if we knew anything about the case first (and $ 1 000 000 000 isn't all that much to MS)

How do you make an *OS* incompatible with an *application*?

Isn't it the application's job to be compatible with the OS?

And another thing (probably deserves its own thread): why the hell is AOL using MS? This has got to be the stupidest thing ever. MS gives AOL *hundreds of thousands* of potential customers. And they're SUING? Damn, if I were in charge of AOL, I'd be so in bed with MS that it'd take a crowbar to get me out. Bill and Steve would have personal AOL servants on the MS campus. I mean, c'mon, without Windows, AOL would have NO CUSTOMERS! I just don't get it.

why dont they just sue for a million gajillion dollars?

the $1 billion has to be pulled out of their asses, how else could you come up with that much in damages?

MS has made a ton off of Sun's java platform. There is no doubt if you think about all the java MS uses.

Good old Sun Microsystems - :p

When is their next earnings report due out? Seems like Scottie has become as bad as Larry and Billy lately. ;)

BTW, I love their SPARCs and Ultras.
