Sun Sparc

Just wondering what the performance difference is between an ultra sparc and an x86 proc are. How does Sun get away with putting 550 mhz ultra sparcs in their entry level servers? Are they just much more efficient or what? Yes i know clock speed isnt everything, but im still curious about what sun does that makes them so popular for certain server and cluster applications.
