One of my current projects requires a system ideal for accessing a large database (1TB+) with a low amount of concurrent connections (1-10 simultaneous). We will be using an Oracle database with a license for a two processor machine.

It was recommended to us that we use a Sun Ultra 40 M2 running Solaris and the price tag on the machine spec'ed out and handed to me was over $7k.

I don't have the specs in front of me but the machine has about 6GB of memory. I really don't know anything about Sun machines besides the fact that they're expensive and eBay runs on them :) It's also hard to find an honest review comparing Dell and Sun servers geared towards small businesses - perhaps I'm looking at the wrong websites. Is there any technical reason why we should opt for a Sun machine over a cheaper Dell machine? If there any advantages to using Solaris over some Linux variant, couldn't I just install Solaris on the Dell box?

Thanks
