i was discussing office suites with a colleague of mine, and he told me that he never suggests openoffice.org because part of the eula is that sun owns any documents that are created by it. he said that if someone write a book using openoffice, the author has to give a portion of the profit to sun.

i told him it probably means that derivative works from the source code would need to be distributed under a similar license. ive never read the eula because im a terrible techie.

does sun own my docs?

No.
Your friend my be hung up on the term documentation, as it refers to manuals for openoffice and such. There is a specific license agreement about documentation.
