Sun Leaks 6-core Intel Xeon, Nehalem Details

If there a reason for trying to make an intentional leak appear unintentional? Is it so they can deny responsibility if plans/schedules change?

On the sun PDF it says mPGA604 along with the words itanium replacement, and also the words 24 core onclave, and also the words, SUN.
Meaning, unless your an SP500 company, or a mid size company looking for either 25% or half in IT upgrade, this processor will be nowhere near your budget. If you thought 1000 dollar EE processors were expensive, welcome to server world my friend, Great Xeon processors start at around 700-800 dollars.
Server based GPU cards can run 2g's.
Mid level Server boards will run about 400-500, no IP35-E in the enterprise world.
*sigh* i think you get the point. In short, dont hold your breathe in getting one of these unless your a CEO in a large corporation whom needs a IT upgrade.

The timing looks to be far enough out (2H08) that it really makes sense to only those folks who are wanting to upgrade their existing server farms. (speaking about 6-core dunnington of course)
For the rest of us commoners it would appear to be a much better value to just hold out for quad Nehalem and have 8 threads of goodness.
The stuff I do has about 20 concurrent threads (or more if I want to keep pushing, I'm a programmer these days), so I say keep'em coming AMD/Intel!

Does moores law apply to cores now ?

I can see it now, new AMD 5 core solution with unparalled performance, the note reads: yes, we did it again, a botched batch of proccesors came out of one of our fab's so instead of six, you get 5 but what the hell, maybe we'll get it right one day but for now we'll say that we are covering a niche in the market

Ah, my first personal computer when I headed to college was an i386SL. It was teh uber step-up from my parents 8086 system.
In the purest interpretation of what Gordon Moore wrote in his original article, yes it does apply. Moore's law was defined with respect to the "number of components" on an IC (integrated circuit) doubling every 12 months.
Mainstream media sunsequently re-interpreted Moore's law and replaced the definition's use of "components" with similiar (but not the same) words of transistors, clockspeed, and performance "doubling every X number of months".
Since the number of components (define as you like, I like xtors) is increasing in the "core wars" it continues to be true that Moore's law is upheld.
The 6 core processor shouldn't be viewed as part of the same expansion as dual and quad cores, its only in the DP server segment, if you look there the processors in that segment are always pretty crazy deviations from the norm (like Tulsa and its giagantic cache etc..)

These are for the 4P systems, though so your looking at 24 threads with 24 cores, with 4 Dunnington based processors, definitely not for your average everyday people.
Nehalem is interesting, but I think I will sit out the first generation and wait for more mature technology a la Westmere.

Yeah it will be a tough wait indeed, I am planning to move to Q9550 in Q3 this year with the planned price drop, and then sitting it out for awhile. My computer is already pretty good as is, and I don't play games enough anymore to justify spending so much money on the computer.

By the time Westmere arrives here's to hoping we have reasonable DDR3 pricing, and aren't limited to 2GB densities per DIMM.

I did skip water and went straight to phase (blame Yoxxie)...although it can be said that on occasion I have turned off my phase unit for a weekend only to come back and find my computer had converted itself to a water-cooled rig while I was gone.
(ice melted, nice little puddle in the bottom of my case, no hardware harm done though)
