Sun JVM on Fedora Core 3 / Firefox 1.0PR

Fresh install of FC3, comes with Firefox 1.0PR. Java VM doesn't appear to be installed by default, as the "plugin needed" puzzle piece appears over all Java test page applets, and Firefox gives me the option to search for plugins/extensions... but when I have Firefox search, it doesn't find a suitable download. Tried going to www.java.com and downloading/installing the Sun JVM RPM, but I am still unable to view any Java applets... Any ideas, or anyone else run into similar trouble?

java -version does show I have 1.4.2 installed. Options for Firefox shows the "Enable Java" option checked.

Thx in advance...

You need to manually register the java plugin with your browser. I've done it in the past with FC2, but for the life of me I can't get it to work with FC3. It seems there is a lot of different paths, like mozilla paths and firefox paths, but I when I make system link it seems to make my browser not load anymore.

Anyway, there's directions here. There's also directions on Sun's site, but I'm not sure if they work with Firefox or if it's Mozilla only.

I just installed the plugin on FC3. I used the java package from jpackage.org. You have to rebuild the package, since only Sun is allowed to distribute the binaries, but after I did that I had a nice little plugins rpm which nicely installed the plugin. Mind you, if you do that you should use only jpackage.org java packages, nothing directly from sun or elsewhere.
