Sun is actually talking with Walmart to work out a deal were you can buy low-end computers running Linux and it's Java-desktop stuff. Customers will be able to turn to Sun for support of their computers and stuff like that.

The Sun one looks awesome!

That microsoft video was a waste of time. It was made in 1999 and I think is not nearly as cool as Sun's. We have no guarantee MS will ever use it because the average user would be lost in its applications. Hell, I was confused by their messed up layouts just by looking at it. It didn't look easy to navigate at all.

The Sun one is advantageous and actually works nicely and seems to be easy to navigate.

Yah, but the MS stuff like that has been around for a while...I'll see if I can dig up a link, but the Sun stuff just seems more practical and better thought out.

Your lucky..Just by clicking on the link, RealPlayer re-initiated itself in my startup tab. God I hate that sh!t. Real and thier crappy player/content need to die with SCO and Rambus.</end rant.>

Somehow I can't help but think MS will just use it for tons of eyecandy.
 
Sorry Apple beat everybody to the 3-d desktop, but that's not new. Apple always have the newest stuff first, it's part of what makes them "Apple". And it's completely accelerated.

But I finally got around to viewing the video.....

This 3-d linux (I suppose) desktop is obviously very impressive, and it appears that it was running completely from a laptop, so it's accelerated, too. You couldn't get everything to run that smooth on anything else short of a multiproccessor machine or a accelerated nice video card.

There are a few experamental 3-d desktops for linux you can get right now, like that 3-d view to change virtual desktops. Another one I found was one were they created a cube and a few different shapes and mapped VNC sessions to them. Nothing as slick as that stuff though.

I wouldn't be suprised if this presentation is what is responsable for the rumors that MS pushed back the longhorn stuff back another year or 2. It's pretty impressive, IMO, and wouldn't be the first time stuff like that happenned.

If Walmart was to offer that as a desktop in a computer that was a 100 dollars cheaper then the same computer that runs MS windows + had a full Office Suite compatable with anything from MS, I think most people would be very tempted. And a good thing about that is that Walmart is bigger then even MS is and can't be bulled around like Dell or HP can (even if they would have to subscibe to yearly support contracts if they need help). Maybe Sun will get their revenge against MS just yet.

With the increase in the design in X with off screen rendering of windows, cleaning up the code, proper acceleration and things like that comming from people like FreeDesktop.org and Xouvert you can easily keep 20 year old software design modern for another 20 years. Or at least it seems like it. (I still think network transparency is the nicest thing since sliced bread) 🙂
