Summer is slowly coming upon us, so thought this may be an interesting topic.
Are you excited or do you dread doing long drives?
What are you bringing with you?
Those driving alone, how far and have you done it before?
Vehicle preventative maintenance or maintenance you plan on doing before heading out? Out of province/state insurance, do you buy them?
Do you book hotels in advance for multiple stops or just gun it 24/7 between few drivers?
Traveller's cheques?
What's in your trunk?
Tips for staying awake?
List your vehicle(s).
I see some few years back people making trips on their motorcycle with stuff packed in the back. Kudos to them, I know I will never have the patience or nerve to do that, not knowing how many truckers, road ragers are on the road, and how bad the weather can get.
Those with pets, do you bring them along or have someone watch over them for you? Please leave your fishies and aquariums at home!
Curious to know as well those who travel the steep and winding rockies of the west (mainly between Denver and Vegas), how your vehicle behaves, whether it has the power to run the marathon or dies of overheating resting on the side of the road? I've seen quite a few I4 oldies stranded on the side up in smoke back in the days.
One last note, if you plan on using your cell phone a lot out of province/state, check with your provider as they may have a special package for your for that one month or so and you can switch back when you come back home. When I went they offered a plan for $80 but I declined, but was later faced with a ~$300 or so bill. Whoops!!
I personally have never travelled far by myself, but would like to venture to Vegas from Calgary this summer. Just for a few days in the city plus the 4 days it takes to get there and back. I plan on staying/sleeping overnight on major gas station highway side. Budget would be around $1600. Vehicle Honda Prelude 5th gen. My credit card covers travel insurance, but I'll have to look in greater detail. Never driven the rockies in the Prelude so really interested in how it performs. I'm too lazy to answer the rest of my own question right now, maybe later.
Tip as well, before you leave call your CC company and notify them of your trip, otherwise they may freeze your card providing you with unnecessary hassle. Same with your debit card. I don't know about other banks, but the one I used to work for can and does do that. Also a reminder to those who take medication, make sure you have sufficient supply before you head out.
Safe driving
If you wish to share pics from years prior, that'd be nice as well
