Thanks to anyone who's reading this. I've been a longtime reader of anandtech and other tech hardware sites, and have like most of you, built my own rig. I'm trying to earn some money this summer to help my dad pay for my college over the next few years, and was considering working for a local computer store that repaired or builds new computers. Is there any kind of certification necessary to do something like this and how much would it cost, etc. I just figure I could make more money doing something like that, then working at the mall like alot of my friends. Thanks for any help.

Some of those jobs can get monotonous, I suggest you apply at other places as well. THe reason those can get monotonous is because you could be stuck building and repairing systems all day or something else.

No offense, but you are what, 15 or 16? I don't think you have the right to make a comment about a summer job, and paying for college. If you enjoy doing something, then it will not become monotonous.

So it's safe to say that if I go in there asking for an open job, I won't sound like an idiot, without any formal training ?

so long as you can show you know what you're talking about i'd think you'd be ok...

side-note: if you're in college (or going to be) why not find something in your field (if it's not computer)... good experience and good on your resume? my 2 cents

I'm a math major, and I'm finding it hard to find any job/internship that would be up my alley. We'll see how things end up. I might substitute for math classes lol.

I'm in the same situation. I am thinking of applying at a computer place in town but I dont think i will like it that much since it is a really small store.

I am 16, you're right. If you like building computers all day everyday then go right ahead. If the job involves more than just building computers or repairing them such as selling them, give that a shot. I've spoken with some of my friends who like building computers and knew the owners of the shop. They gave them $20 an hour in cash and they were told to build computers. They said even repairs got old fast. He said if they wanted to sell computers at this shop, they would only get commission, no hourly wage. I guess selling them might not be that bad, but when a 16 year old friend is getting $20 an hour and not having to pay taxes on it and quits the job, that means it got boring.
