Summary of this police officer/Harvard prof. story?

I have been so busy these days that I am only getting pieces of this story.

Could someone please give me a summary of what has happened?

And why on earth did Obama put his nose into this local issue? I mean it seems to me that he immediately took sides along racial lines without knowing the facts or without respect to what the officer (the law) thought was best.

But I am totally confused by all this...mostly because I have no idea WTF happened.
