Sulfur Smelling Smoke on 2002 Durango

Please someone help me. I have a 2002 dodge durango and while stopped at a light I have smoke coming out of the tailpipe it smells like sulfur and sometimes gas stalls and doesn't flow smoothly.

I would not condemn an expensive converter so quick.

Your truck is OBDII compliant and if your converter was bad, you would have a Check Engine light (Oxygen Sensor). I would look elsewhere first.

Normally on a computer controlled vehicle, a catalytic converter sulfur smell is an indication of a rich fuel condition. The map sensor is likely dumping extra fuel. Could also be a weak or failing O2 sensor. Often a weak or failing O2 sensor will work enough but won’t throw a code and set a CEL.

You might also try changing gas brands and see if that changes anything.
