Suitcase nukes lost

BEVELACQUA: Well, let's talk about the worst one. The worst one would be the suitcase nuke. Now, that is an actual device that creates a nuclear explosion. The special forces teams, about 15 years ago used to carry them. They called them a Saddam device. They weigh about 110 pounds. It's not actually a suitcase, but it's made portable. When it blows up you biskly get Hiroshima, Nagasaki where it blows up. That's totally different from a dirty bomb.

KASICH: Now we believe, bob, in terms of the suitcase nuclear bomb, we don't believe that these terrorists are anywhere near to be being able to have that. Correct?

BEVELACQUA: I wouldn't say that. I would say there are rumors that at least 70 are missing, 15 more realistically confirmed.

KASICH: Right, but without the codes, though, they're really not very effective. I mean, you can't set them off unless you have the codes, correct? So let's not scare people.

BEVELACQUA: No. I would say that's a fairly accurate statement, John, but I would follow it up that anything in this world is for sale. If you need the information bad enough and you happen to be a multimillionaire, could you probably get your hands on that information

It's pretty simple. Somebody else just "looses" a couple million dollars coveniently at the same time.

I heard that the security on some of the facilities that use to house some of the Russian's nukes was so pathetic that a humble team of dickwads with guns could get in there.

Thing is even if a nuke can't be setoff without the codes it can be deconstructed. Apparently the difficult part of making a nuke is not the information but rather the materials.

I wouild but on the off chance we fail the last place I want to end up is in a Russian Prison. That's probably almost as bad as an Alabama one

I thought this was old news. I remember seeing a similar story on 60 minutes or Dateline years ago on how Russia had lost track of many suitcase nukes. Still scary. What I remember from the story is that these are smaller than most people would imagine and not large enough to take out an entire metropolitan area. These also have to be maintained or else they become useless.

I don't know. It would be hard to top Jefferson County Jail, Bessemer City Jail, or any of the prisons in south Alabama.

Not the military stuff and not that poorly made that we can afford to be cavalier. Evidently a few of these bombs were smuggled into US cities for a possible "first/instant strike" during the Cold War.

And yes, this is old news.

That or some peasant ended up with them. Dumped the innards out and uses the kewl metal briefacase to carry barnyard animal grooming supplies in.

how does that compare to Alabama prisons ?

the numbers of missing are based on a study done almost a decade ago after the collapse of communism. theres lots of reasons they could appear lost even when not, ranging from the russians asking the wrong people to soldiers simply being lazy and not wanting to look through rooms of paper documents. it is a concern, but its not as bad as it looks.

Maybe there is a problem, maybe there isn't. So many of numbers were inflated during the cold war that we can never truly be sure how many nukes either side had. For all we know, there may not even be any missing. They may never have been made in the first place.
