Suitable upgrade for a modest computer?

I have a E8400 (3Ghz DC), ATI 4850 and 4GB on Win7. I was thinking of buying a modest GPU to replace the 4850, the 6850 looked like a decent card.

Will CPU have enough juice? Can I use all modern GPUs with HDMI as a HDMI sound card like my 4850? Will the 6850 even be a noticeable upgrade, at least 50% better at 1080P?

If you can chug along til the end of the year you can upgrade to 7xxx series(AMD)/6xx series(nVidia)
