A new documentary, "Suicide Killers," by French-Jewish filmmaker Pierre Rehov is sure to draw barbs from the other camp. Rehov interviews Palestinians imprisoned for trying to detonate suicide bombs and concludes they're influenced by a religious culture that represses sexual desires and channels the resulting frustration into homicidal rage.

On a more serious note though, cultures/people that are forced to repress sexual desires end up doing some crazy things. Certain religions whose leaders are known to take part in questionable acts toward young boys are just one such example.

I read some similar hypothesis a couple of months ago. They mentioned how one of the 9/11 bombers was fascinated and revulsed at the same time by western women. It was said the young suicide bombers yearn for the heavenly virgins they'll get after death while they cannot fulfill their sexual desires in this life.

..Because clearly I stated in my post that in the history of the world there have been no cases of athiests committing any sort of crime, only those with strong religious affiliations..

Atheists can't say 5 hail marys and forgive themselves for having done bad things to other people, nor can they justify it thinking they're acting as their god's hand.

This has been presented as a dichotomy - either the reason is rage at Israel or sexual repression.

I don't think either answer is correct. Many people have rage. Many people are sexually repressed. Few people suicide bomb.

The cause is the set of cultural restraints and proper behavior that they are taught. At some point in the past, religious ferver and political cause joined forces in some leaders so that warfare was encouraged. At a later point, the causes dissolved and left a baseless and irrational set of behaviors that are based on a hollow shell of religious fanatacism and political excuse.

But filmmaker Rehov reaches different conclusions. Several of the young men whom he interviews behind bars say they are eager to reach paradise and the 72 virgins promised by Islamic theology. "Those who blow themselves up get a good bonus from God -- they marry 72 virgins," one tells Rehov.

The idea of sex appears to be more of a fantasical thing than something that many in other cultures just take for granted. I doubt if someone was promised the same idea in a culture of the US let's example, tha the motivation would be quite so high for people in another, more sexually repressed culture.

Evolution has made us to be horndogs..to procreate, to reproduce and ensure the longevity of our population, while society and civilization has made us less so. And when you completely harness this away, and make it into something incredibly sacrilegious, you're bound to have some major psychological issues..
