An explosion has ripped through a bus in central Jerusalem, Israel radio has reported.
Reports say several people have been killed and dozens have been injured.

The blast was heard across the city and ambulances are rushing to the scene.

It comes a day after the Palestinian militant group Hamas vowed to avenge an Israeli missile strike on Tuesday targeting one of its leaders in Gaza.

The Associated Press news agency quoted Israeli police as saying the blast was caused by a suicide bomber.

There has been no claim of responsibility for the attack yet.

If this was done by hamas it looks like there will be several more attacks according to statements made by them...
Seems everyday the peace plan chance of success could get smaller and smaller...

They have been using them for a long time now. The thing about the particular incident with the Hamas leader is that it was multiple missiles that were actually fired because their first one missed. Usually they can hit the care with one missile and be done with it.

Yeah well, did you seriously expect the two sides to finally agree to peace?

there are 3 fronts. abbas, sharon, and . . . hamas (and their ilk).

abbas has to prove his promising credentials. sharon has taken a few brave steps, and
i expect him to deal with his poisonous elements, but will abbas crush hamas, islamic
brigade, etc. now that he has been challenged.

and btw, someone throw arafat into the sea :disgust:

wouldnt exactly say that sharon has taken a few brave steps, his current contribution is well overrated at the moment

Abbas was in talks with Hamas, they walked out but later on Abbas managed to convice them to come back in. Then you get Israel 2 hours later ( after Hamas agreed to keep the talks going ) blowing off their load and pissing off Hamas and effectively undermining Abbas. Like I said before the discrediting campaign of Abbas has begun and seems to be working.

B*llshit. If the Israelis were thirsty for Palestinian blood there wouldn't be any Palestinians left. They've shown remarkable restraint, and I think it's somewhat hypocritical of the United States to force the Israelis to sit at a table and negotiate with terrorists when we do our terrorist negotiating with cruise missiles.

BTW, kudos, Czar. You used to only post stories when the Isrealis attacked the Palestinians. Glad to see at least a little balance out of you.

I think the new Palestinian PM is giving Hamas too much dignity than it is warranted. A wholescale attack on the entire organization's infrastructure should've been done a long time ago by arafat and his cronies. By talking to them only legitimizes them. I think israel should carry out as many liquidations of political and military leaders of terrorist organizations as is humanely possible before real talks begin. It is utterly unacceptable for hamas to feed the hungry, blow up buses, and have an influence in the future of palestine. The nexus of terrorist organizations and their state sponsorers is a real danger to any civilized country.

You just don't understand. It's not one group or person. You can't cut the head off the snake. This is a cycle that has been going on for thousands of years. Bush tried but like all others, he failed. Might as well let them kill each other.

Actually, being someone from the middle east, I know that the cycle of violence has only been going on for 100 or so years. During the end phase of the Ottoman Empire, the British moved in to destabilize the area (just like india/pakistan) through their geo-politics. If you push for development of energy, water, food, and co-operation, you will have peace.

Abbas never got the chance to see if it would work out or not in the end. He got Hamas to sit down and talk and that was a big thing in my opinion. Of course that was all shattered and destoryed yesterday in wreckage of the aftermath of Isreal's attack.

Yes because that was the answer all along right. Wow were have you been for the last 30+ years ? Quick get Bush on the phone someone !

The only thing that would bring in the end would be a total destruction of whatever hope there is now left. Let's look at Northern Ireland and see how they somewhat calmed things down over there. It was not through whole sale destruction of the "other" side but by getting both sides to just sit down and talk. This was happening 2 hours prior to the events of yesterday but no one will never know if things could of panned out or not. It's easy to go with the basic gut instinct of just saying "kill'em all", yet in the end the best route for peace is always through restraint even if you are the only one practicing it at the time.

Well seeing as we provide them with BILLIONS of U.S. TAX DOLLARS in aid every year. Hmmm... I would think that they would want to listen to us and have some patience. Not to mention the fact that they owe their very existence as a nation to this country and it's tax payers ( see UN 1948 vote ) who have been providing them with weapons to defend themselves in every war they have fought. Well of course if what we have to say is not important to them and if they don't care about the plans we have laid out to bring peace.....Well then let us withdraw our foreign aid and remove our troops from the border between Egypt and Israel. I can certianly think of better uses for that money and those U.S. soldiers ( i.e. guarding the U.S./Mexican border. ). Then they can do as they please and they will not have to answer to us anymore.

I mean how hard is it to see that the only way to stop the palestinian terrorist groups from acting are direct talks, something that Sharon doesnt seem to want. The population supports them because they are the only hope they have at the moment, only giving them another hope, a different hope is going to weaken the terrorist infastructure. More and more killings on their leaders will only result in more and more retaliation attacks on Israel and therefor more and more Israeli retaliations which will for the most part do more damage to the civilian population than to the terrorist groups. This results in the civilian population supporting the terrorist groups even more, only because they are their only hope at the moment. Talks between Abbas and Hamas and co will bring hope to the population, if and only if they see Abbas as a viable way out, but no that wont happen because Sharon said today that the attacks on ALL Hamas members will go on. Sharon just doesnt want peace at the moment, definetly not the way all parties have agreed on, even Sharon.

That's why he only moved out few empty trailers and did not go full out by removing populated settlements. Sharon knew what he was doing and knows what these actions will bring out in Hamas and how it will discredit Abbas in-front of Bush and the Palestinians. He will make Abbas look like he is not doing enough to control Hamas in-front of Bush while at the sametime making him look like sell-out to the Palestinians who will feel betrayed by the promises made by Abbas and Bush. I mean Sharon all but stated in the past that "There will never, ever be a Palestinian State" if he were in charge of things.
