Why does it need explaining? Except in a few cases if they wanted anything other than attention they wouldn't be here.

Often, yes. Most don't want to do it but want it to be known how serious their issues are and how helpless they feel.

Wow. Just wow.

Some of the replies on this thread are about the most stunning display of naivety I've ever seen.

There are, of course, some people that are just looking for attention, probably the same people that listen to 'emo' :p but there are many, many others that are clinically depressed. It's not the same thing as when your girlfriend dumps you and you're sad for a while, it's completely different.

and they make "suicide attempts"? It really isn't that hard. Is a side affect of depression stupidity?

Those people are looking for attention/ help not death.

I don't think it's something you can fully comprehend until you've been in that position, or had someone close to you in it. A good part of it is about needing attention - that's a given.

Definitely cries for help & attention. They probably feel like their existence is useless..
Get them professional help, but also support them as much as possible (show them you care).

Well I've seriously considered suicide does that count? I've had a couple people I know "OD" or slit their wrist (improperly).

If I had taken slightly more than the suggested dosage of sleeping pills would I be better qualified to answer?

I edited my post. You'd think having some first hand experience, you'd have some more empathy on the situation.

I know a lady who attempted suicide four times on each occasion she would drink a bottle of pills then call someone. Her problem was she had marry someone against her parents wishes so the ostracize her. She is a very sweet person. I feel very sorry for and try to cheer her up the best I could. My feelings are she does this to get her father's sympathy so far though for about five years now it hasent work.

Don't get me wrong, there is definitely an attempt at getting attention from someone underlying, but it's usually more complex than just "Hey, I want to be noticed!"

Many times the person probably doesn't even realize the underlying emotions that are involved with the attention thing. And the reason the 'attempts' are not successful is likely because part of them still wants to live.
