I'm building a new PC for a buddy who is cost conscious. I need a basic motherboard with solid overclock features and figured the Asus P5B featured in the motherboard section of anandtech would be a good match. Here is what I'm thinking so far...

Asus P5B retail $141

or

Asus P5B OEM $95

with

- Intel Core Duo E6300 $183
- Seagate 400GB SATA $100
- OCZ Gold 2GB (2 x 1GB) 240-Pin DDR2 SDRAM DDR2 800 (PC2 6400) 5-5-5-12 $200

- SeaSonic S12 Energy Plus SS-550HT ATX12V/ EPS12V 550W Power Supply $130

- SAMSUNG Black 18X DVD+R 8X DVD+RW 8X DVD+R DL 18X DVD-R 6X DVD-RW 12X DVD-RAM 16X DVD-ROM 48X CD-R 32X CD-RW 48X CD-ROM 2M Cache IDE DVD Burner With 12X DVD-RAM Write, LightScribe Technology - OEM $32

He's going to use my old 6600GT until he gets one of the upcoming DX10 cards such as the 8800GTX. I'm also providing him with a case and I think this pretty much covers it.

Anyway, I'm looking for advice on a solid CPU cooler that isn't loud. Don't really care about the cost of the cooler much, any suggestions?

Any suggestions about the rest of the build are also very apprectiated, thank you for your time.

There is no best.

I like HSFs that blow down against the mainboard because it helps cool the board population.
This is to be considered more important when OCing. Thermalright SI-128 with a 50cfm, 120x25 fan.

...Galvanized

Thermalright SI-128, huh? That's interesting, I was originally thinking about a ThermalRight Ultra-120 until I found out that it wasn't in stock anywhere. Instead, I turned to the scythe infinity but I didn't want to buy it without consulting the forums.

A nice Arctic Cooling Freexer 7 Pro is good for me. I don't worry about northbridge cooling as my board (AB9 Pro) has the fancy Silent OTES thingy. Seems to keep it nice and cool.

Change RAM to this.

People are getting well over DDR2 1000+ on these things... plus it comes with a chocolate bar. 😛

You should also change your motherboard to the P5B-E.

In order from best to worst...

Tuniq T-120 (we all know the story on this) > Thermalright Ultra-120 > Scythe Infinity > SI-128 > Scythe Ninja > Big Typhoon

Tuniq T-120 looks awesome, can't believe that I missed that review. So, what is the difference between the P5B-e and the P5B? Does it come with the same "unlocking" overclocking features as the P5B?
