i just put together my system in the new antec p180b. took me a while just to figure things out, but i realized after i put everything in with 3 hard drives. 1 cd rom. 2 of the HDs are sata and 1 if pata & 1 dvd pata. i didn't really have that much power plugs for every fan. i'm using the top and rare outake and the middle fan they provided, i just switched the tricool to yate loons. but i'm wondering about a better setup for fans since i bought plenty during the sale for yate loons.

i have 2 hd in the top tray and 1 in the bottom tray. and my psu is the antec smartpower 500.

Put one in the bottom HDD tray with your HDDS running on high. One in the top HDD tray empty on high, one in the top exhaust port running low, the extaust out the back running high. This is how I do it. This is assuming you have a fan controller or adjustable fans which I'm not sure if you do.

This is how I am running my P180 airflow right now:

My P180 Fan Setup

Not sure what you have for system components besides the SP 500 but...

PSU Channel
I have a Yate-Loon installed in my powersupply and it keeps both of my HDD's cool in the bottom channel. Don't waste your time with an extra fan in the bottom channel unless you have a couple Raptors down there or something🙂 Make sure you tape up the vent holes that are around the PSU exhaust area so that all air has to exit through your PSU.

Upper Intake
My temps benefited greatly from mounting a fan on the back of the upper HDD tray, when I had the fan in the standard mounting position it just seemed like it wasn't doing much. Have you tried mounting all of you HDD's in the lower channel? (this may justify the need for a fan in the lower channel)

Upper Exhausts
My temps were exactly the same with the top exhaust fan removed and the opening taped off. I also have the long strip of vent holes along the card slot area taped off also. It would help to know what you are using for a HSF...

I have also removed all fan grilles and have more pics if you would like to see them.

For a look at a lot of airflow setups check this site out: SPCR's General Gallery just look for thread titles with P180 in them, there are a few on the first page right now.

edit:added link to SPCR galleries

Holy mackerel!!! What a great job!!!

How in the hell did you manage all the cables and never mind the damn fans.

THis was my first build so I spent a lot of time researching here and SPCR. With a little time and some imagination (and pics of Dynamics3D's rig for inspiration) it was pretty fun. If you study this pic you can see my P180's dirty little secret😉 (it's just to the right of the upper HDD cage) This is actually Ver2.0, the origional looked like this.

Hey, you have talent man.

Your version 1.0 does not look bad either.

Are your IDE cables under the fan? I don't see them.

I used 1 grey IDE cable (it's just by the bottom right of the cpu fan in the pic) and you can see I folded it a few times (grey part of pic between the optical drives)

I don't mean to hijack the thread but can anyone point me to a guide on fan controllers? I'm considering the p180 and I don't want to get one that has knobs that'll stick out to god knows where and prevent me from closing the case. Plus, I'm not sure if fans are universal or if I have to buy fan controller specific models etc..

You don't use dust filters in yout P180? How do you keep it so clean inside??

I put together an in depth write-up of my latest upgrade. It includes lots of pics including the use of a P180, Yate Loon case fans, a Zalman fan controller, Zalman cpu & vga coolers, sleeving the psu & fan leads. It's a good read.

You can find a link to my article here.

If you use the P180 there is room for a fan controller with knobs. The 5 1/4 bays are recessed to allow ample clearance.

nate,

did you use a dremel-type tool to cut the fsn grills? If so what type of blade did you use?

wow nate very very very nice setup, super clean!, and your summary helped me out a quite a bit. just on how i think i'll set it up soon. but i might PM you with a few more questions/help if you don't mind.

I used a dremel with cut-off wheel No. 409. Its a flat cutting disk ~1" in diameter.
