Life was going too well. :disgust:

I have an Antec Sonata Case and I just plugged an external USB hard drive into the front port. The front port felt a little loose and it did go in. All of a sudden the screen goes black and the box reboots the front lights blink and it powers but nothing is displayed to the screen. I assumed it shorted in some way. I can also smell a sweet scent. Something burned out somewhere. But where??? Just the system board??? more???

Now it powers on PS - OK, Fan on processor - OK, The system board light is green if that matters - Asus P4P800-E Deluxe.

Ideas???

Anyone....

Thanks

Did you disconnect the cable to the front from the motherboard? Perhaps you've only destroyed the port and not the entire motherboard.

Reset the bios, see if it boots.

If you have any additonal hardware, start swapping out one at a time to test to see if you can find the problem.

Well I reset the system BIOS. Still powers up (PS, CPU fan, lights) hear no hard drives spinning up. Nothing comes on the screen.

I guess its time to order a system board. Which makes the most sense.

check 5V power rail. no hd spinup means no 5v hd electronics.. 12v is ok as fans and lights are on though. check at a HD molex. check red to black and yellow to black, one should be 12v the other 5v
