Suggestions on Cover Letter for a Recommended positions?

My dad has given me a list of companies to apply to that his company frequently uses. He told me to mention his name and my relationship to him. My question is, what is the best way to drop my dad's name in a cover letter and how do I personalize the cover letter? Would a letter (with the resume and personalized cover letter) be best, or should I call the company and talk to the person directly. Say the person I am supposed to contact is John Doe. Would I write "Dear John Doe," to start the cover letter off? Should I just come out with my dad recommending me apply for the position, or sneak it in later? Should I contact the company, or have my dad give them a call. Trying to figure out this career networking stuff. I'll be graduating in may 😕 Any help is appreciated.
