Hi

I'm looking for your advice on which software to use to take a file of some sort of video format (avi, mpeg, whatever) and burn to a DVD to be able to be played in standard video players. DVD producer came with my computer but it is clumsy and too advanced for my needs. I dont' really want any editing / producing tools. I just want to take a file, have it formateed into the common video format for DVD's (what is it mpeg-4?) and have it burnt to a disk.

does such a program exist? and is it free?

One way to score some affordable software is bundled with a cheap Firewire or video-capture card, whether you actually need the card or not. Just in case nothing else comes up for you :)

yeah that is true. that is where i got dvd producer, with my dvd writer i bought. I was just hoping that there was a smaller, quicker program available for such a common task. I was hoping there would be somethng as simple as auto gk, where i could just select an input file, and have it authored to a dvd which works in a home theatre dvd player.

I think DVD Santa is free... and so is DIKO... they can do any of the file conversions you mentioned.

As for burning the resulting files to DVD, look here for a very large selection of tools - including frewware stuff, guides, and all the other stuff you need:
