I'm toying with the idea of building a video capture box... please help me spend money :)

Basically I want the flexibility of a replayTV or Tivo without the subscription service... I don't even have television service ... this would sit in my mother-in-law's house and just capture stuff so being able to schedule captures ...based on time I guess... is a must.

I really am entirely uninformed right now so any pointers or ideas at all are really appreciated.

Help me come up with a list of stuff I need.

I'll need a good video capture card (suggestions please)

What software packages are available for this type of work???

that sounds like a pretty sweet idea.

i would suggest a newer geforce with TIVO, or even an older ati all in wonder pro or soemthing, depending on how good of quality you want to get. you may also want to look into something called a "personal cinema" ... its a separate box that hooks up to your nvidia video card, and you can record tv through that... one of my friends has the personal cinema, and the software it came with has the ability to schedule recordings and stuff from tv. search on eb@y for them, there are a bunch up on there

Anand's review is absoutely great... the only problem is he is nearly forcing me to drop cash on the ATI's All-in-Wonder Radeon 8500DV It apperently has everything I could possibly want...:disgust:...the wife porblably won't like the price though.....

i have an radeon aiw and it works pretty good in terms of tv capture...it's based on software so your computer has to be pretty powerful...also capping takes up alot of space so make sure to get pretty large hard drives...in fact 2 separate hard drives is the best setup...one for the os and the 2nd to record caps onto

as for the ati capturing video from an outside source such as a vcr or camcorder, i have never tried it....but i did hear that aspect of the aiw card is not that great

Anand said it was good and I'm easily swayed... are you saying I should get the 7500?...Let me check if I can find any differences of note...

Apparently the only difference is improved gaming which I'm not terribly interested in....

"These cards all share the same drivers and software package thus giving them all the same pros and cons. If you currently have an AIW Radeon then the only reason to upgrade to a newer model would be to get improved gaming performance.

I've been looking into tv capture cards too. The AverTV Studio looks like a winner to me.

I don't need another video card. I already have three. I need a tv capture card. I think the Radeons are video cards that can capture tv signals. The AverTV Studio is a tv capture card, period.

I'm buildin the box from scratch... so (well I have an OS drive and a couple of other things...) Since I'm actually going full geek here and planning it carefully rather than just slapping spare parts together which is my usual MO... I figure I might as well make it a neat project... I'm thinking my own blend of Tivo/Console/Mp3 server... so I'll be a hit with all the ladies ;)
