Suggestions Needed BADLY for 1.6a system

Hello guys, after hearing all the success stories, I really need suggestions.

1. Where did u buy your 1.6a chip at? you are able to oc it high of course
2. Which MoBo?
3. Ram? will my old PC2100 ram from my AMD comp work good? to at least get it to 2ghz?
4. HeatSink and Fan, hopefully won't be loud..
5. Will my 400Watt Future Power PSU be good enough? Or is Enermax PSU really necessary

That is all, thanks in advance for the opinions

1) Got mine at Googlegear.com. Runs great at below default voltage and gets to 2.4 ghz.

2) I am using a P4S333. I suggest the P4S533.

3) I am using Micron PC2100 right now. You should be good if your PC2100 isnt substandard.

4) The stock intel fan is good at speeds up to 2.5 GHZ. I dont know about using it past that... you are going to strain the processor if you do... it wont fry but why be mean to your new Northwood? Give er' a thermaltake "fragon" dragon orb.

5) I am using a "dirt cheap" 300W power supply in my rig. You will be doing great with yours. Make sure it has the P4 connector. If it doesn't, you are best to stick with Asus boards, like the reccomended P4S533... because they can take a molex on the motherboard to feed the need of that power hungry demon of speed. Im getting a nice quiet 350W Antec in a couple weeks. 🙂

You're going to love your rig. I upgraded from a P3 866, and I cant believe how much I can't stay away from my PC now.

My epox 4sda+ only ran up to 138 fsb with pc2100 memory, so I don't recommend it. Just got a soyo p4s-645dx dragon ultra at Fry's, and will set up in a few days. Alot of people recommend the asus p4s533 for overclocking. It has an extra jumper for adding +.10 volts during cold startup. My 1.6a Costa Rica cpu was a dud, only running at 133 fsb (bought it at newegg in Feb). The 1.6a has actually increased in price recently, so you may want to consider the 1.8a for a few dollars more. If you want to overclock your pc2100 memory, use the 4:5 ratio setting in the bios. Try running it at the default ddram voltage (usually 2.5-2.56), and if it won't post, try adding +.10 volts, and if still a no go, change ddram to +.2 volts, and it should run ok with the cpu clock at 133 fsb. You can also get heatsinks for your ddram for 6-$8 at Fry's or order online. Your 400 watt ps should work fine.

I'm going to be moving from a P2 400 with a 16 Mb TNT card to a (hopefully nicely (~2.4 or 2.5 Ghz)) overclocked P4 1.6a and a GeForce 4 Ti4400 with 128 Mb of memory. Oh god, I'm going to explode from just thinking about it.

thank you guys for responding, I guess I gotta cross my finger on getting the cpu. I'll try my own ram see if it works good doing 2.4 or not first. Hmm I can't seem to find that square plug for P4s on my PSU, maybe I should go for P4S533 like u said. But if I do have that plug, would the P4B533 b any better? seeing P4S is a sis chipset and P4B is a Intel chipset.
Again thx the helps 🙂

btw, my ram is a generic with micron chipsets? or are they just microns. and a samsung i think.

The Epox 4G4A is looking good and gaining a lot of popularity. Its an Intel i845G based board with plenty of CPU and mem overclocking goodies. You can get it for $98 @ mwave.com. It doesn't need the P4 12V connector.

I got my 1.6 at Newegg. It was a costa rica. My mom-in-law and my mother both wanted me to build them PCs as well. So I ordered two more 1.6As from newegg. both were Mylasia. So I swap mine for one of those... 🙂

Mo board is a p4S333 and my ram is Mushkin DDR2700, stock fan for now with a 470W TTGI PS from Directron.

I'm just running at 2.1 right now.
