My buddy is opening up a new club in downtown Houston and I'm helping out with locating stuff he needs for the club.
We need 5 plasmas or LCD's for visualizations for the music.

Specs:
flatpanel
wall mountable
does not need to be hi-def
42" or larger

Suggestions on where to pickup some at a good price?
Local would be nice... but if price is really good we could order on-line

Yea, wait for the Dead Friday blow-outs. I am sure there will be wicked deals on last-gen (or even current-gen) LCDs and Plasmas.

If you can't wait that long, then just browse the Houston adverts.

Ordering TVs online can be pricey with shipping. Due to their tremendous shipping weight its very very very rare to find a site with resonable shipping from internet only sites. Your best bet is to paruse your local electronics store and compare prices. Most places match other's prices. Another way to pick up cheaper TVs with with 'Open Box' or "Displays'. Quality (and potential damage) can vary but sometimes you can get a good deal. I got $400 off my $1800 TV for buying an Open Box (You do need to check them over though)

Edit: yeah, plasmas lose brightness quickly with age - go with an LCD

I would go to a local reputable company that will also do professional installation. Get a good warranty in writing to protect from any issues. I did that for my company and got a warranty in writing. One of the LCDs I bought did burn in and was replaced at no charge.

I see a lot of companies, universities, etc using Fujitsu units. I'm guessing that they are cheaper. Try them out.

Thxn guys for the suggestions. I think we will prolly go up to Microcenter as they are selling some Olevia 42" LCD HDTV's for $999 AR.
Not bad considering what they will be used for. Should do the job.

Listen, if you don't know what you are talking about, just don't post. Jesus.

Plasma will be fine. I'd actually recommend them over LCDs. LCDs are great, but I like the PQ better on a plasma. They also have better viewing angles. LCD's viewing angles have gotten A LOT better over the years, but they still exibit some issue with vertical angles. Since it is going in a club, I'd go plasma for the viewing angles and for what I find to be a better picture. With a good plasma, whatever angle you look at it, the picture looks perfect.

I'd recommend this one. You should be able to get a good 8-10 yrs out of it in a club environment.

it's for a club -> no one cares about picture quality.
Just go to CostCo and get the cheapest 42" panel you can find.

Argue if you want, however, the results speak for themselves. Plasmas may boast the equvilent lifespans of LCDs but only when the proper conditions are met. They have a lower tolerance to humidity and temperatures than LCDs. If you don't belive me, check out the manufacture's specs on their sites. Also, improper handeling or shipping is much more likely to disrupt a Plasma and shorten its life span. Its also much easier to break a Plamsa. We do TV repairs where I work and we end up replacing Plamas much more often than LCDs, almost 2:1

Depending on the type of club (jamb packed with people?) I would argue against a plasma due to issues with heat and humidity

Panasonic rates their operating temperature for their plasmas between 34°F - 104°F. If a club is over 104°F, you've got more to worry about than the plasma. They also rate the operating humidity between 20% - 80%. Again, if the club has over 80% humidity, you've got other things to worry about. Like I said, under normal conditions, which most clubs fall within that, a good plasma should last you 8-10yrs (in a club environment) and that is until it reaches HALF the brightness. Shipping is not an issue if you buy from a good online retailer. They usually take extra steps to ensure someone is not throwing your plasma around before it gets to you. I'd call that a non-issue. And handling the plasma should not be a problem if you are not retarded. Treat it with care (just like you would installing ANY expensive set) and you'll be fine. If he is using it in a club, you handle it once when installing it and that's it. You're not moving it to LAN parties.

The ONLY reason I wouldn't recommend a plasma is if it will be sitting in an area with a lot of ambient light (like right infront of a window with direct sunlight), or if the club is at a high altitude (if it is on top of a mountain).

JackBurton FTW

I was going to correct the other guys but JB has done so for me

I'd go with a 50" Plasma and the one linked by JB again is a very very fine example. It may not be 1920x1080 but only one released plasma is and it is a lot of £££ to put in to a club for a display. 1920x1080 would be wasted in a club anyway imo.

Since this isn't for an AV room, any cheap plasma will be fine.

A 42 inch decent quality plasma isn't all that expensive (Panasonic and Hitacho comes to mind), 1600 bucks.
